from A Tarheel Poet’s master series

    Listen to me….
    I know…
I haven’t exactly done the right things
    said the right things,
been there to show you that you are my queen,
    but
    I know

    see, woman (correction, black woman),
    protector of my heart,
    easer of my pain,
I need to re-obtain that connection
    of you and me,
back when we shared that rib
    in paradise’s garden,
I need to re-devote my time and energy to you,
like when I covered you in animal skins
    on Ethiopian sands,
taking your hand, and letting you know
    that you were my goddess,
    my primary concern,
my love for you burning a hole in my very existence,

    because I know…
    that without you, I’m nothing…
    simply a man,
whose plans backfire and land him
    back in those despairing depths
    of emptiness,
    and even if I succeed.…
the fruits of my labor less sweet
    because….
you are not there to share them with
you are not there, to lay me against your breasts
    reassuring me, that I’ll suffice,
you are not there, to braid my hair,
you are not there, to run eager fingers down my back,
or encase me in your intimacy,
your kisses, your touches, each taste, each smell,
    the look in your eyes,
when you tell me, without words, that you…love…me
these are the things I need…
I want to make love to your blackness…
that sepia goodness that seeps thoughts of tranquility into me,
    your beauty swirling around me
in shades of beige, chocolate, tan….
a rich mahogany peace rushing over me
cause I know you understand….my pain,
    because you share it

    Black woman…
    Serengeti soul sister…
Water bearer of my heart’s Nile…
I long to tell you that
    I love you…
    to show you that
    I’m sorry…
to explain to the world that
    you’re irreplaceable….
God’s most beautiful creation, shining in her own distinct glow,
you’re the blessing of the black man…
and I’d just like to take the time
on behalf of all of us…
    to lovingly say…
    I know

    Thank you for that one...

In times like these, I thank you for all sistas who need to hear that EVERY NOW AND AGAIN...

And hopefully this acknowledgement may be something you (and other Black men alike) needed to hear...

This piece sets my soul on fire. You have skills to the infinite level, and I am left speechless. All I can say is thank you!
