At the end of your arm, you have a hand. On that hand you hopefully have 4 fingers and what you call a thumb which is seperated from the other 4 fingers because it is DIFFERENT(which is why it's not called a finger and wasn't always there. If you spread your fingers apart, you can almost see the web that used to be between them. (but that's for another subject)
