A BLM protester in North Carolina got a harsher sentence than anyone from Jan. 6. Why?

In December, a 28-year-old was sentenced to about seven years in prison by a federal district court for setting fire to a Dollar General Express store during one of 2020’s Black Lives Matter protests in downtown Raleigh. The man, Richard Rubalcava, was also ordered to pay more than $350,000 to the Fortune 500 corporation.

The U.S. government launched a campaign to discredit the petition, fearing it would inflame tensions at home and impugn the country’s reputation abroad. The sometimes bombastic, communist overtones of the petition, as well as the communist associations of some of the petitioners, made it easy even for sympathetic Americans to see it in an anti-American, ideological light.

Opinion | 70 Years Ago Black Activists Accused the U.S. of Genocide. They Should Have Been Taken Seriously

Seventy years ago this month, on Dec. 17, 1951, the United Nations received a bold petition, delivered in two cities at once: Activist William Patterson presented the document to the U.N. assembly in Paris, while his comrade Paul Robeson, the famous actor and singer, did the same at the U.N. offices in New York. W.E.B. Du Bois, a leading Black intellectual, was among the petition’s signatories.

The group was accusing the United States of genocide — specifically, genocide against Black people.

Patrisse Cullors, No Longer a Leader of BLM, Charts a New Course

Cullors also became a writer on the Freeform show Good Trouble that led to an overall deal with Warner Bros. TV Group in late 2020. That same year, Cullors — through her work as an artist, she has presented performance pieces at the Broad and Hammer museums — co-opened an art gallery, Crenshaw Dairy Mart, in a former convenience store in Inglewood.

Plea deal reached with two of Ahmaud Arbery's murderers in hate crimes trial

In a statement Sunday night Arbery's parents, Wanda Cooper Jones and Marcus Arbery, addressed the latest filings. They said they are "vehemently against this deal" because they believe it would allow the McMichaels to serve time for both cases in a "preferred" federal prison.
