Civil rights leaders, police differ over protest response


MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Civil rights leaders appealed Thursday for Minneapolis police to exercise restraint but the head of the police union said officers should get tougher with protesters after a night of tense confrontations over the fatal shooting of a black man by an officer.

One slogan, many methods: Black Lives Matter enters politics


When the Democratic National Committee recently rejected adding a presidential debate focusing exclusively on issues affecting black people, it got divergent responses from two groups widely associated with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Campaign Zero, whose agenda centers on ending police violence, quickly embraced the offer for a town hall forum instead and began working to arrange forums for Democratic and Republican candidates. Next for #BlackLivesMatter: Google Backs Tech to Keep Police Accountable


IT’S AN OFT-REPEATED statistic: The United States is home to about 5 percent of the world’s population but nearly 25 percent of its prison population, making the US the world’s biggest jailer. Add to that number all the family members, friends, advocates, formerly incarcerated people, and communities disproportionately affected by mass incarceration, and you have what tech people like to call “a critical mass.”

Now, Patrisse Cullors, one of the founders of #BlackLivesMatter, is working with the American Civil Liberties Union and the Ella Baker Center in California to build technology to serve this community. Just this month, Google’s philanthropic arm, Google.org, said it would donate $500,000 to the project under a $2.35 million grant program to fight racial injustice ...
