You left me hanging like
Strange fruit in a tree

Had we not chose to run
We'd never be free

Familiar with a sun
That beat down on me

Black is who I am...
Not what I've come to be

Signed on a travelin' man
With baggage to bring ~

But in the promised land
Denied everything

While in a minstrel show
I'd long to be king

Black is who I am...
Not what I've come to be
