Black is Like

Black is Like
The universe
the only thing greater than yourself

When I was a little
nappygirl,
I saw a painting of
A Black Man
Holding a Black Woman
Nursing their Black Child
And they were floating
In a violet sky
Content in their knowledge
That they were the beginning
Of the universe
I remember feeling
Hypnotized by
It’s awesome beauty
And power
That’s what
Black is like

Black is like
Flying thru space
Mesmerizing and awesome
Like Lady Day and Nina Simone
Like fresh collard greens
And a sweet hambone
Like Bergamot the Queen
Diggin the scene with
A gangster lean

Black is like
All things underground
Like the slaves railroad
Like that "TRUE" hip hop sound
Like brilliant planets
Venus, Mars, and Pluto
Spinning around
Like James Brown's sounds

Black is like
Afros and cornrows
Blackeyed peas and
Neckbones
Mau Mau beats
And Zora’s prose

Black is like
Slow grinds in
purple lit basements
break dances on
New York pavements
I can’t even
Explain it
You have to feel and taste it
That’s what
Black is Like
