there is no market among blacks for fine art photography.
most blacks don't even know what it is.
there seems to be a mix up in the thread.
people seem to be equating "art" as film.
perhaps that is all folks know.
art goes far beyond film.
control of imagery is paramount!
I agree. Art does go beyond film.
I believe Film, Cinematography, Photography, Music, Acting, Poetry, Dance,
Singing, Sculpting, etc.. are all modes of Artistic expression. They are all
Art. I started this thing out about Film because if we were to try an discuss
this in a way that encompasses all Art, it would quickly become general and
meaningless. And there's also the issue of Cultural Impact. An oil painting
in the 57th street gallery may be profound, but you don't have folks lining
up outside the gallery to get in to see it.. taking their kids and sitting in
front of it for 2 hours.. Precious does. If you walked up to the average
black person and asked them, "did you see precious".. they will say either
yes or no.. meaning, they know what it is. Ask them about that painting
in the 57th street gallery.. that profound and deep and impressive painting..
they won't know what you're talking about.. Cultural impact and cultural
relevance have to be thrown in there.. There's some dude burning wood
in this living room.. creating beauty and making statements with his work,
but if we can't see it, it has no cultural impact. And there's also the
question of what the Art does. Film evokes emotional responses in ways
that mimic actual life experience.. and how it does that needs to be
understood by the viewing public.. especially children.. it can lead to real
confusion.. especially to a people looking under every rock for meaning..
for identity.. digging through everything looking for their own reflection.
