Many laptops came with a battery saving configuration as default what you have to do is right click on the battery icon in the right corner and change power options when running on batteries, this will reduce the laptop battery life but you will have a better display. Give your ideas to save the life of batteries.

If you can tun off usage of say your DVD/CD ROM and other peripherals, that will save battery life.

Reducing the number of services and applications running on the laptop can save battery life.

Dim the screen. It's responsible for most of the power usage in most use cases. It may be hard to read at this point. Programs that invert colors or warm the display colors output may help. There are some other steps a person can take:
  • Utilize power profiles that will automatically handle a lot of things
  • Defrag your HD to make it more efficient at working with stored content
  • Upgrade to more energy efficient drives in the unlikely event there's a higher RPM drive installed into the machine.
  • Shut off the wifi radio when you're not in an area with a connection
  • Adding more ram may help
  • Clean your battery contacts every now and then
  • Keep an eye on the health of your battery. It's functional time is limited no matter what a person does. After it reaches a certain number of cycles it will lose capacity or start discharging oddly, retire it.
Ultimately, you can get a lot out of just buying a more efficient laptop. Some of them are getting ~10 hours of life with wifi these days.
