Barrington Irving: Youngest Black Man to Fly Around the World “Encourages Students to Pursue STEM Field”


In 2007, Barrington Irving became the youngest African-American man to fly around the world. He was 23 years old and only had $30 dollars in his pocket when he flew out of Miami, Florida. However, that didn’t stop him. Irving had big dreams and a plan he had put them in motion. Irving was born in Kingston, Jamaica and moved to an inner-city in Miami, Florida at the age of 6. As a young boy, he had never gave too much thought to being a pilot. That was, not until he met United Airlines pilot, Capt. Gary Robinson. When Robinson asked Irving if he had thoughts about being a pilot, he told Capt. Robinson, “He didn’t think he was smart enough” ...

He felt no different about himself as a young black man than most (myself included). Far too many of our young men and women have a very low opinion of themselves and their abilities. We never know what we are really capable of until we put forth the effort. That is when most of us are astonished at what we can accomplish. A main reason why we need to have more positive role models and mentors in addition to positive reinforcement....Gotta continue to battle the negative stereotype by those who suppress and marginalize us and those who attempt to sabotage our progress....
