my 4 year old niece sat next to me
barbie in all her glory sat naked on the end of the couch
blonde hair matted and tangled
missing 1 foot
yet still unmistakably
barbie

“she is the queen of all of the animals…
she feeds the animals and moves her hands like this”
my niece slowly moves barbies arm in a sweeping motion
(barbie is feeding the animals)
permanent smile, pink lipstick
amphetaminely happy
yet still unmistakably barbie

“now you try!”
my niece hands me barbie so that i too can do the sweeping motion
(barbie is feeding the animals)
“very good!” my niece says

feeling eerie i promptly place barbie back on the end of the couch
blonde hair matted and tangled
now sporting a blue ribbon
she sits with her ankle crossed over her non-existant foot

my niece and i go outside to blow bubbles

and then there were three...with barbie all broken and tangled up! one thing I pick up from this piece is that children don't care about looks and perfections, they just love barbie...no matter what she looks like..its how barbie makes her feel when she plays with her-have long monologues with barbie being the child and she the mother...why can't us adults learn a thing a two from children?

cute flow sista-enjoyed!
lo'
