    Aussie apology after 2 centuries
Leader says sorry to country's original people

February 13, 2008 BY ASSOCIATED PRESS
CANBERRA, Australia -- Aborigines organized breakfast barbecues in the Outback, giant TV screens went up in state capitals, and schools allowed students to watch the telecast of Australia's apology Wednesday for policies that degraded its indigenous people.
In a historic parliamentary vote that supporters said would open a new chapter in race relations, lawmakers unanimously adopted Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's motion on behalf of all Australians.
''We apologize for the laws and policies of successive parliaments and governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these our fellow Australians,'' Rudd said in Parliament, reading from the motion.
Aborigines remain the country's poorest group, and Rudd has made improving their lives one of his government's top priorities.
As part of that campaign, Aborigines were invited for the first time to give a traditional welcome Tuesday at the official opening of the Parliament session.
Marcia Langton, an Aborigine academic, celebrated the apology as a huge step forward.
    Historical facts
    A timeline about Australia's Aborigines:
    * 1788 -- British settlers establish a penal colony in Sydney.
    * 1791 -- Officials grant parcels of land to convicts who have served their time, beginning years of dispossession of Aborigines.
    * 1901 -- The Commonwealth of Australia is formed, but the constitution excludes Aborigines from the census.
    * 1910 -- State governments introduce policies to remove mixed-blood Aboriginal children from their families.
    * 1967 -- In a landmark referendum, Australians vote overwhelmingly in favor of changing the constitution to count Aborigines in the census.

Euros hunted down and killed, then forced assimilation into the euro society by the usual methods - rape, kill, torture, threaten. They became marginalized to the extreme - overwhelmed in poverty, alcoholism and servitude - when the civil rights era hit, they did get their 40 acres - Aboriginals 'given back' about 20% of the land (while representing 2% of the population). Interestingly enough, once given some land all services to the land stopped - they were given the land with a view to abuse further by the capitalistic euro - give land to a dirt poor, uneducated, dependant people - then deny them social funding for schools, health & basic infrastructure due to their low populations - then watch them flouder - then offer to "rent" their land out to large corporations, such as mining, and in return the euro will build AA rehabilitaion centres, fix some sewers and even hire a few of the 'natives'.

    sound familiar?
