More about the book:

Developed through the Center for Faith & Service at the National Crime Prevention Council, and funded by Pew Charitable Trusts, this new addition to the best-selling Strategies series will document practices that have been successful in preventing crime through the combined efforts of faith-based and criminal justice agencies. This book will take readers behind the scenes of some of the best programs in the country, with a discussion of the partnerships and components necessary to successfully apply their strategies in any setting. With tips from the field provided by program organizers, and lessons learned from the obstacles they faced, readers will be equipped to take these exciting strategies back to their own community.

This collection of tested strategies is designed to:

· Promote engagement in crime prevention efforts by faith-based groups.

· Promote the value and utility of partnerships with faith-based organizations among the criminal justice community.

· Identify key components of an effective partnership between criminal justice agencies and the faith community.

· Demystify the context in which faith-based organizations partner with the criminal justice community by describing potential obstacles and how they may be overcome, as well as by highlighting the benefits of these partnerships.

· Promote awareness of crime prevention programs that focus on under served populations, including people of color, refugees and immigrants, ex-offenders, and children of prisoners.

Mental Health Announcements

The findings of the President's Commission on Mental Health have been
released. The President's Commission, which was established in 2002, was
tasked with conducting a comprehensive study of the United States mental
health service delivery system.
To improve access to quality care and services, the Commission recommends
fundamentally transforming how mental health care is delivered in America.
Specifically, the Commission states that successfully transforming the
mental health service delivery system rests on two principles:
*First, services and treatments must be consumer and family centered,
geared to give consumers real and meaningful choices about treatment options
and providers - not oriented to the requirements of bureaucracies.
*Second, care must focus on increasing consumers' ability to
successfully cope with life's challenges, on facilitating recovery, and on
building resilience, not just on managing symptoms.

Additional information about the Commission, its mission, and interim and
final reports are available at www.MentalHealthCommission.gov
http://www.MentalHealthCommission.gov. To order print copies of the
commission's final report, call the Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Services Administration's National Mental Health Information Center at
1-800-662-4357 or 1-800-228-0427 (TTD).

Advocacy and Research

Advocacy seeks small business researchers, or researchers who want to
become small businesses, to perform economic research via a request for
quotations (RFQ's). The topics are chosen because they are researchable,
show the status or role of small businesses, can be a springboard for
further research, and can affect public policy. For ideas of topics
Advocacy has funded in the past, see http://www.sba.gov/advo/research.

i have been a vegetarian since 1990. i have been meditating since i was a teenager. i have been using herbs since i was a teen. well, really sooner, my grandmother used her own tinctures for all of us.

this is information. use it or be used by it. its important that we know whats going on around us. if you are suggesting that there is no use in what reports the FDA puts on, i humbly disagree.
