Deal: Hands off Atlanta schools, for now
    By Kristina Torres

    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Gov. Nathan Deal said Wednesday that he would pursue legislative action against the Atlanta school board “only as a last resort” as the city’s fractious board works to regain full accreditation for the city’s high schools.

Deal emerged from an hourlong meeting Wednesday with Atlanta lawmakers saying that while the group had a free-ranging conversation, they all agreed the board must work without question to prove themselves capable by a Sept. 30 deadline from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).....

....SACS accredits Atlanta’s high schools. It placed the system on probation Tuesday for reasons related entirely to the board’s governance and said the board must make progress on six “required actions” to improve its leadership and performance.

The agency is recognized as one of the nation’s top accrediting agencies, and oversees standards for thousands of schools in the southeast. But while Deal and other members of the Atlanta legislative delegation put pressure squarely on Atlanta’s elected board, two lawmakers took aim instead at SACS and its parent, AdvancED.

State Sen. Vincent Fort, D-Atlanta, and state Rep. Rashad Taylor, D-Atlanta, questioned the validity of SACS’ report, saying it was fraught with gossip and innuendo and, in Taylor’s words, was “light on substance and facts.” He also questioned the agency’s financial dealings. Fort went so far as to give the report a failing grade and implied the agency influenced it in favor of the system’s administration and the powerful Metro Atlanta Chamber.

I pray they get this together and quickly.

2011 graduating Seniors are okay; but Juniors might oughta start looking at other school districts for next year if APS doesn't get it right in time.

As if the schools teach anything worth while anyway. The city of Atlanta has a serious organization problem when it comes to ANYTHING!

I hope they get this together real soon. The students are the ones that suffer in this.
