Millions of people have been duped into believing they can lose weight by eating fat. African Americans, many of who love fat anyway, are easy targets for the so-called Atkins diet aka low-carb diet.

Yes people on this diet do lose weight. But at what cost? As long as we buy the idea that skinny is healthy we will continue to be led down the road to death by whatever helps uslose weight.

This article shows how Atkins tried to cover up his own health problems, including a heart attack, to save his reputation as a "diet guru."

If you or someone you love are thinking about starting the Atkins diet read this then use your brain.

I can bear witness to the fact that there is truth in a diet high in fat can be healthy for us.

The solution is in finding the RIGHT TYPE of fat and avoiding the wrong carbohydrates for a healthy balance.

Instead of so much Omega 6...we need to uptake more Omega 3 which is needed by the brain and nervous system to keep us healthy.

As AfroAmericans we eat TOO MUCH carbohydrates in starchy foods like potatoes, macaroni and cheese, spagetti and soda pops.

This is what gives us diabetes and other health problems.

We should focus more on the the vegetables like broccoli, corn, carrots, and spinach for our carbohydrates insteaed of so much rice, potatoes, and pastas.

Instead of greasy fried fast foods, our fat should come from roasted meats and seed oils such as flax seed oil and olive oil.

Well my layman's theory is that it is the combination of unused carbs and fat that makes us gain weight.

All carbohydrates break down into sugars that are used for energy. What isn't burned up through exercise is stored in fat cells. Now what happens to fat cells when there aren't enough sugars to fill them? They shrink yes. So you think you've lost weight and you do look smaller. But exxess fat also accumulates in the arteries and around the heart where you don't want it.

I've never had a weight problem (losing weight atleast) so I'm not exactly sure how it works but my sister went on that diet a few years back and dropped about 50 pounds inside of a year by cutting out white potatoes, white rice, and sodie pop.

But she still gobbles down hamburbers and corned beef sandwiches with fried eggs on top.

She's greasy as hell, but still keeping her weight down....

If only losing weight were the only issue

Fifty pounds in one year is not bad. That's less than a pound a week. so that's healthy. However if she is greasy on the outside she is probably greasy on the inside and that isn't healthy.
