I'm really diggin the whole retro movement
going on in R&B right now.. including what Raphael Saadiq and R.kelly are doing..
It's refreshing to see those artists that show their connection to the past. The
things they produce feel thicker.. more resonant. When I heard this song,
I immediately had the feeling of Stevie Wonder's "I Wish".

I like that he did a family version too.. I like the "forget you" one..
because it falls right in with the nostalgia of recalling childhood. That's what
we used to say.. and just like that. This whole thing has so many elements
of R&B history rolled up in it..

Just like the Neosoul movement, Raphael Saadiq is right smack dab in the
middle of this yet to be named and killed retro R&B movement. Raphael's
music has always been rooted in African american cultural tradition.. The first
single off of Tony Tony Tony's first album was "Little Walter" which was a play
on the black church staple, "Wade In The Water". And since then, alll of his
music has had that connected feeling.

R.kelly is something of an R&B historian himsellf. He is the direct product of
the R&B singer/songwriters of the past. His work encompasses just about every
major movement in R&B music. This latest move toward that Jackie Wilson
form really allows him to showcase his connection to R&B history. Its good
to see him once again moving forward musically.

From R.Kelly's Love Letter album.. same album that features "When A Woman
Loves".. comes this retro track called "Love Is".. a duet with K.Michelle a singer
who sounds almost exactly like the late Tammy Terrell. This song sounds
like Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson came out of retirement.. and the homage to
the late great Marvin Gaye is surely felt.

    Check it out:

The Soul Train Awards performance was incredible.

There was a time when our Performers really could not be touched. This
performance here is reminiscent of those days. There are only a handful of
what I call full-out or all-out performers out there today but they are all
    phenomenal.

I kept expecting Mavis Staples to come out and drop a verse in that song.. This song would be perfect with her voice..
