What started with orange and apple juice has evolved into a billions of dollars industry with hundreds of different flavors available for your drinking pleasure. If 10 years ago fancy brands such as Naked Juice and Odwalla were all the rage, now it's raw juice bars that serve freshly juiced fruit and veggie combos to hipsters forgoing a Starbucks fix.

While an occasional juice can be a fun and tasty treat, America is addicted. According to the USDA, 50% of Americans consume more than half of their fruit intake as juice!

Fruit juice has a health halo, created not only by beverage industry marketers, but by our very own government. For years, the USDA has allowed fruit juice to be considered as a fruit serving. Millions of kids across the country meet fruit at lunchtime in the form of apple juice.

    In its
2010 dietary guidelines, the USDA hinted that real fruit is healthier than fruit juice, but the wording was very weak.

    i'm diabetic.

    can't drink juice, too sweet.
it is much better to eat the fruit than to drink the juice.
you get the pulp and the sugar is buffered and does not hit your system as fast.

As much as possible, I prefer to squeeze the juice from the orange, over store-brought juice, which is full of dye and coloring. So, 3 oranges is my choice. Also, frozen concentrate, as far as I know, is safer.

Exactly. I know you are right, that the white pulp is necessary for maximum health, too. I buy bags of the mandarin oranges. They are very small, easy to peel, and tasty.

I think it is better to eat the whole orange than to only squeeze the juice from it. Because your body benefits from the pulp too. You need the fiber.

Absolutely, I do eat the whole orange, lol, sometimes after squeezing the juice; sometimes I don't squeeze the juice, just eat the orange.

I'm sorry for giving you the impression of not eating the orange, at all.

No, problem. I used to not LIKE the pulp. Especially, from the Navel Oranges. And, I would slice the orange into "smiles" to avoid eating the pulp. But, my Chinese Acupuncturist and Medicine Doctors hipped me to the necessity of eating the pulp of the orange, the peel of the apple, etc. And, I've learned to not hate it.

I like tangelos too. I'm all in, the easy to peel species.

    *smile*

And, it is amazing how much sugar develops in the processing of juices.

Yep! Been eating oranges all my life ... My reply was focused on the juice side pertaining to the article, not pulp.

Again, I'm very sorry about misleading you.
