Former President Barack Obama tearing up while answering a question about what can be done to reduce gun violence. “We know that we can’t stop every act of violence. But what if we tried to stop even one?” the former president responded.

It is not too hard to find a story today about the relationship between the African-American community and guns. Typically, these stories paint a complicated and often inaccurate view of the role guns play in the lives of people of color.

For example, it was recently reported that a 15-year-old African-American boy was shot and killed May 6 by San Diego Police responding to a 911 call. The teenager allegedly pointed a BB gun at the police when they arrived. The police stated that the teenager who was shot made the original 911 call. In a separate report, a drunken gunman opened fire at an apartment pool in San Diego on April 30, targeting and killing African-Americans and a Hispanic. Yet, in another report, Austin police shot and killed a 24-year-old African-American man that is alleged to have fired at the police officers.

The gun problem in this country is not limited to the Black communities.
The media focus is on the Black community, as whites carry out mass shootings in schools, churches, theatres, killing entire family members, etc.

Sep 28, 2013 ... This pro-white bias in regard to gun-ownership is both unfair and highly ... assuming that white people with guns are somehow less dangerous.

Strategies for Reducing Gun Violence in American Cities

Urban gun violence touches on issues central to American life: safety, equality, opportunity, and community. As thousands of city residents are killed or injured with guns each year, mayors and other community leaders face an urgent challenge: finding effective solutions and implementing them to make a difference now and into the future. This report, a collaboration between Everytown for Gun Safety, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, and the National Urban League, is a tool for all city leaders who want to reduce gun violence.

Guns and race: The different worlds of black and white Americans

“The nation’s consciousness has been raised by the repeated acts of police brutality against blacks. But the problem of public space violence—seen in the extraordinary distress, trauma and pain many poor inner-city families experience following the killing of a family member or close relative—also deserves our special attention."

What's the Solution to Gun Violence in America?
Parsing the robust (if seemingly gridlocked) debate

A&Q is a special series that inverts the classic Q&A, taking some of the most frequently posed solutions to pressing matters of policy and exploring their complexity.

Updated on April 27, 2016, at 10:10 p.m.

Any American with even a glancing familiarity with the news can rattle off the progression, a litany of place names transformed from cities and towns into metonyms for gun violence: San Bernardino, Colorado Springs, Umpqua, Charleston, Fort Hood, Navy Yard, Sandy Hook, Aurora …. That doesn’t even take into account the thousands Americans killed by guns in single-death murders, or the roughly 21,000 who take their own lives with firearms annually.

The many shootings have produced a robust (if seemingly gridlocked) debate about how to stop gun violence.

This Video Debunks The Myth Of ‘Black On Black Crime’

There are many sayings about Black communities that go unquestioned. One of the most prominent ones is the term “Black on Black crime.” In a new video, The Root is showing exactly why the myth of “Black on Black crime” is completely out of step with the historical racism and segregation that created and diminished many predominantly Black communities in the first place.

Lets look at how felons manage to get hold of guns...it's not rocket science, they STEAL them.
Once armed with a STOLEN gun they have the upper hand against someone that is NOT armed.

LMBAO about the debunking of Black on Black crime video...****, what led you to search for that video?.

Your second amendment says it all -- you all have the right to bear arms therefore it's going to be your weapon
of choice to settle an arguments...quit crying ffs. Here where I am only criminals have guns.

If someone enters my house uninvited and I use deadly force I'm going to jail ffs.

I'm sure Obama was never opposed to hand gun permits in Chicago IL. Imho Obama was opposed to assault weapons
on the streets of Chicago and rightly so. However, the NRA ran with it and claimed Obama aimed to take away
your hand guns.

So the solution in the US is allow every citizen the right to carry a concealed hand gun.
