New antibiotic discovered in ocean mud 12 hrs ago Researchers discovered a new antibiotic in a very unlikely place: mud. Specifically, in bacteria found in mud from the Pacific Ocean. Discovering completely new antibiotics is rare, but great news for anyone fighting drug-resistant superbugs. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria is becoming a greater risk every year, and the Infectious Disease Society of America says development of new antibiotics is too slow. This new compound is a welcome discovery, as it has a new and unique chemical structure. Initial testing of the stuff shows it's extremely effective against anthrax and MRSA. The discovery also means there's huge potential for new materials to be found in the still-largely-unexplored ocean. Wonder what else we'll find down there. — By Nick Mangione [Source] Trending topic: antibiotic ocean mud | Click to see more on msnNOW.com .
