It’s been too long since I’ve gotten into nature.
An Old Oak Tree
Beneath an old oak tree
Where nature plays her little games
Of “Catch as Catch can”
With “Put’n’Tang”
And all the little animals joined in the fray
Dilly-dallying along the way
There were dozens of them…surrounding him
Squirrels aflying from limb to limb
There was Sy’enna the songstress
The grasshopper phenom
And Iota the frog prince
Sitting atop his log kingdom
I’ve seen him
My senses were assuaged by
The honey-suckled sweetness
Of so many fragrances
…And sounds
All around…
Were scores of activities
(And) Lush greenery
Birds and bees
Pollinating plants
And serenading trees
As leaves flutter in the breeze
I listened
I listened to the melody nature sang
Of yesterday’s stories…and long-ago rains
Just to entertain
ME
It was a raucous groove
That made the sun turn
...The moon move
Have you heard this tune?
This beat of nature’s footsteps
Made my heart leap
And I wept to the melody of
Humming birds
And bumblebees
As a gentle breeze swam my way
It whispered through the trees
Causing thousands of leaves to dance
Each branch…swaying
To the weight of Breathless Wonders
And Everyday Beauty
Got me
Longing
For
The
Serenity
Of
That
Old
Oak
Tree
Yesss…
The
River
Screamed
Background harmonies
For this rhapsody
Crying froth
And spraying the tears of its joy
Along the banks of its shores
They littered the hollow with
Melodic tunes
Of natural blues
And I listened
I listened as the sun turned
And the moon moved
While mankind
Abused
Mother earth
With his nonchalant attitude
Still…seedlings spring to life
And animals endure the strife
Of that same
Mankind
I listened
I listened as good out dueled bad
And the “Sad of Heart”
Did a two-step to
Its whispered tunes
I wasn’t immune to its (gravity)
That oak tree was cool
It shaded light
(And) stood guard over life
It was a lazy day
Awash
In the contentment
Of an innocent heart
Daylight marched by
(And) Nightfall settled in
As Darkness came to be
A chill encompassed me
Yet, that old oak tree stood its ground
For scores of years
It has wavered…to and fro
Its branches, like a comfortable hoody
Hangs heavy. Swings low.
Protecting cool breezes
That unexpectedly happened by
Escaping the harshness of an afternoon sun
With a whispered sigh
Layer after layer of his crusted shell
Told the tale of his many…and varied betrayals
By wind and air…and nature’s elements
Had all his many naysayers spent
For day after day would come and go
Only to see that oak tree waving once mo’
Beneath an old oak tree
Where nature plays her little games
Of “Catch as Catch can”
With “Put’n’Tang”
