Maybe the reason we don't seem to learn from history has to do with our moral limitations.

...
Moral limitations or corruption? It's all subjective. Every generation since the beginning of our existence, has had the freedom to make choices. We are molded and influenced by what and who is around us. Out of our existence comes things we judge as good or bad. We don't all think alike, but I believe, thoughts are recycled from generation to generation. Thus, the answer to the question why don't we learn from history? Because we are destined to repeat our history because our base thoughts and needs don't change much. We need air to breathe, water and food to sustain life. Everything else is material. What used to be called six degrees of separation between us is now thought to be two degrees, thanks to social media shrinking our world. We might look different than our ancestors and live in a different time, but we are still basically applying our instinctive hunting and gathering traits.

This is how ancient Rome's republic died – a classicist sees troubling parallels at Trump's impeachment trial

That process, as I wrote in The Conversation last fall, recalls the ancient Roman senate’s compliance with the autocratic rule of the emperors and its transformation into a body largely reliant on the emperors’ whims.

Trump's Impeachment Is Just Like The Fall Of the Roman Empire

That process, as I wrote in The Conversation last fall, recalls the ancient Roman senate’s compliance with the autocratic rule of the emperors and its transformation into a body largely reliant on the emperors’ whims.

Along with the senatorial fealty that was again on display, there was another development that links the era of the Roman Republic’s transformation into an autocratic state with the ongoing political developments in the United States; it’s a development that may point to where the country is headed.

Donald Trump Has One Big Thing in Common with Roman Emperors

Unhinged leaders, dynastic intrigue, devastation and plunder: For 15 years I have been researching and teaching the ancient historian Tacitus’ works on the history of the Roman Empire. It has rarely been difficult to find echoes of the history he describes in current events.

If the coronavirus pandemic marks the collapse of civilization, would we know? Experts weigh in

“It’s actually a fairly easy parallel,” says Patrick Wyman, who hosted the podcast The Fall of Rome and wrote about the topic himself for Mother Jones. The effects of a collapse similar to what Rome experienced in the 5th century, in terms of our modern geopolitical landscape, would look like a fracturing of our nation into smaller, more isolated kingdoms.
