Through the eras, and through the ages,
    Africa has had many dark-stages,

Before the time of religion, like Christianity,
There was peace, but also inhumanity,

Many wrongdoings, such as polygamy and killing twins,
Human sacrifices and many other sins,

    Warring tribes, death will follow,
Dead tribal warriors and their wives feel the sorrow,

But we still had our smiles, our laughs and good times,
The telling of stories of great feasts in the skies,

Celebrations, festivals and rights of passage,
    Dancing, singing, childbirth and marriage.

And then there’s the dark stage,
    What’s about to happen?
Sad-faces, starvation all due to famine,

But now a new darkness has come, it’s a terrible sight,
New people come along, but these people are white,

    Ships, guns chains and lashes,
Pain worse than filling deep-cuts with hot ashes,

    A push, a grab, a pull and a snatch,
And now I’m left lying on my back,
I take a look around to see who attacked
I see the person, but this man is black

He wears a cold face, that has never shed a tear,
But his feelings inside are just nothing but fear,

He does this because he has little bravery,
And he doesn’t want to be sold into slavery,

Off we go, there no real escape,
Our land has been torn, our land has been raped

We go over the seas, where our culture will be left rotten,
Tomorrow our roots, will be half-forgotten,

And so as we enter, the next dark stage,
Will there light shone upon our dark face?

The hurt feels deeper when the enemy looks like your brother or sister. Well written and felt.
