    A good read - http://www.africa.upenn.edu/afrfocus/afrifocus010808.html

An excerpt: "For most people in Western countries, Africa immediately calls up the word "tribe." The idea of tribe is ingrained, powerful, and expected. Few readers question a news story describing an African individual as a tribesman or tribeswoman, or the depiction of an African's motives as tribal. Many Africans themselves use the word "tribe" when speaking or writing in English about community, ethnicity or identity in African states.

Yet today most scholars who study African states and societies--both African and non-African--agree that the idea of tribe promotes misleading stereotypes. The term "tribe" has no consistent meaning. It carries misleading historical and cultural assumptions. It blocks accurate views of African realities. At best, any interpretation of African events that relies on the idea of tribe contributes no understanding of specific issues in specific countries. At worst, it perpetuates the idea that African identities and conflicts are in some way more "primitive" than those in other parts of the world. Such misunderstanding may lead to disastrously inappropriate policies."

The term tribe was a basic concept in African studies that we had as children in the 60s and the term ethnicity was later used to replace it.

    Jomo Kenyatta wrote
"Facing Mt Kenya" about the Kikuyu, his group.

The inter Black conflicts after aparthied where exacerbated by the acceptance of whites as Afrcicans having equal status to the Zulu,
and this played out in the conflict between Mandela ; Xkosa and his political opposition that where Zulu.

Ask any one from Africa who has immigrated here and they will say they are,
    Fulani, Wolof, Mandinke, Ibo, etc.

and the residence of these groups in western Africa transcend contemporary national borders.

The genocide of Rwanda, is hard to ignore,
therfore if there is a problem it might be best to face it squarly and objectively, if one desires to solve it, or prevent it from happening again.

i was actually referring to the "Nation of Africa", some of whom are not actually on the continent of Africa.
sadly, this is all too true.
after over 2500 years of folks beating on our heads, this, too, is a most sad and unfortunate "reality" as well.

black people will fight to the death to be anything but African ...

and continue to talk about "there ain't no unity in the black community".

which, of course, has always been the purpose for the manipulation of all media, education and entertainment such that the rape of Africa and Africans can proceed with your support ... and/or lack of "democratically" putting some brakes on the mess!!.

no thanks. been there, done that, still oppressed ... time for something different.

By my Hair, my Heart and my Soul, I am African

i reckon i'll not be getting back to you then ...

Here in NYC there are African immigrants from about 30 different African nations

and I can say clearly that any of them would be ticked about someone calling Africa a country

Ironicly, when asking folks from one nation, say an English speaking nation about what is going on in a French speaking nation, they quickly and politiely reply

"Oh I am not from there"

So in all reality if I ask a brother from Senegal about how the election is in Nigeria, they will not know and at times not be interested.

If I ask someone from Ghana, what is the situation in Cote D'Ivoire now, I will get the same response

Now I have seen African Americans as brown as me, say flat out thier ancestors never came from no Africa but they are pure blood native American (yeah right, like a First American got lips nose and hair like us?)

but I have spoken to some Yemeni's that claim to be African, and Morrocons that although look obviously Arab with all the features do not like to be called Arab, but instead African

Now with 3 and four generations of whites living in Africa, 2 generations of Chinese, 4 generations of Indians, and 5 generations of Arabs,
    all claiming to be African

In fact there are honorary white Zulus now

There is a constant reminder that basicly Africans traditionaly do not have a racial consciousness, and greeted white folks warmly in first contact and encounters

different from the Yellow races that called white folks white devils when they first met them, on their shores,

we as African Americans, embrace the Garvey concept of Race first

    and Black above all else

No accusation but a simple observation,

    if a race of people,
are being attacked and abused and robbed, and divide and conqoured,
by a single united race, united in focus and purpose

then how is the race being abused, defend itself and protect the future of their porgeny

    without also uniting by race?????

post WW2 history is full of how the French went to this place and caused this tribe to fight againt that tribe

or the Flemish went to this place and did the same

or the British went to that place and did the same

but IMHO, if my cousin and I are drunk and have a heated arguement and are aboput to go to blows,
and some interloper stranger comes and puts a gun in my hand

common sense tells me to stop my arguement with my blood and turn the gun on the interloper:10400:
