Pan-Africanism : Africa And Her People!

Peace,

Even though Im of Afrikan descent, I have Igbo in my family.

The language of the Igbo is also called Ibo. Until recently, what was known of Igbo origins came from Igbo folklore and oral history. Unlike other people in Nigeria, most Igbos are Christians. They live in villages, towns, and cities scattered over the eastern part of Nigeria, south of the Benue River and east of the Niger River.

The Igbos are ingenious and industrious people who can forge or imitate almost anything, even computers, hence the term "Igbo-made" used in Nigeria to describe imitations. The Igbos built large cities such as Enugu where coal is mined and established trading centers at Owerri and Aba. The town of Onitsha, another Igbo commercial center, is the home of the largest outdoor market in Africa.

The Igbos are known for their rich, complex, and dynamic culture. They have a common language but they do not have a government with a king like the Hausa, Yorubas, Fulanis, and Benins. Rather, they have a representative system of government in which members of the group make the decisions. In Igbo government, the men reach decisions by consulting each other, or a consensus is reached through the elders of their group. The Igbo system of government is a simple form of democracy, even though women only take part in decision-making on rare occasions.

Until recently, what was known of Igbo origins came from Igbo folktales and other history. They maintain that "We did not come from anywhere and anyone who tells you that we came from anywhere is a liar." The Igbos believe that their creator, Chukwu, put them in Igboland the minute the world was created and that they did not migrate from any part of the world. That perhaps explains why there are no other Igbo-speaking people in the world.

The organization of traditional Igbo society begins at the village level. The village (ama, obodo, or mba in Igbo) is a community of people who are descendants of one or more male ancestors. These ancestors are usually the founders of the village.
