Thanks for the precise citation, James. The fact that humans originated in Africa was definitely written about in mainstream white magazines like TIME magazine or maybe it was Newsweek years ago (late 1990s) because I remember it was splashed on the front page and I remember reading the inside article about it.
Also, even before reading that article, I was taught about the origins of humans in East Africa years ago in a college anthropology class which is the same info that Brotha Omowalejabali is citing. I specifically remember being tested on the info about these hominids because I had to learn to spell "Australopithecus!" LOL Anyway, I thought this was all common knowledge by now.
Unfortunately, this is not "all common knowledge" even though it should be.
