A judge sentenced a Jacksonville mother to 20 years in prison on Friday, for firing a gun over the head of her husband, who she claimed physically abused her.

Marissa Alexander, 31, testified that Rico Gray physically assaulted her on August 1, 2010, before she fled to the garage, and, unable to exit through the malfunctioning automatic door opener, returned to the kitchen with her gun. She fired a shot over Gray's head, causing a bullet to lodge in the ceiling. Gray and his two sons testified that they were together in the kitchen and in fear of their lives, though one of the sons later changed his story, testifying that he and his brother were never in danger.

Alexander's attorney presented a "stand your ground" defense -- attempting to utilize the Florida law has come to national prominence in the Trayvon Martin case -- but a judge ruled against her, saying that by returning to the house, she demonstrated that she was not in fear for her life.

The case was prosecuted by the office of Duval County state attorney Angela Corey, who is now prosecuting Trayvon Martin's killer, George Zimmerman.

Corey has said that Alexander acted out of anger, not fear.

The 20 year sentence was a mandatory minimum under Florida's "10-20-Life law," which mandates sentences for crimes involving a firearm. Alexander was convicted of three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm

Marissa Alexander case exposes ambiguity of 'Stand Your Ground' law
    [IMG]
To her family and supporters, Marissa Alexander is a woman who stood her ground.

When she fired a warning shot over the head of her husband, she and her family members say it was to prevent another beating.

.......Yep, we shall see. This speaks to my words offered the other day in a post, all we need is Justice, not Just-Us...:

    In the Spirit of Sankofa,

.........Yes Sir, this is the significance of the Trayvon Martin case, which some black folk cannot see. The black public outcry from this one case is enough to ignite a revolutionary spark toward black unity... Which will crush anything that gets in the way, the sleeping Giant is waking up, and coming to the reality of who he is, and why he is... Justice.

I hope so too, but we all know how it'll play out for him. Guarantee you that before it's all over, he'll look like the victim in all this.

    you have gotta be kidding!

This is unbelievable. 20 years away from her children. Unbelievable. My heart goes out to her. I beleive that this government will not get away with this. It's like they are acting evil with an intensity like never before, and I believe it is because they know their time is short...

We need to press. Thanks for posting this thread.

I don't think so. Even though racist are supporting him, it's not because they see him as a victim, it's simply because they just detest Black Americans and support him for what he did. It's their supremacist form of insanity that makes them believe they can harm Blck people and get away with it openly. Sure, they'll put up a defense as though he didn't mean it, and it was self-defense, but they don't care if he is viewed as a victime or not...they just support him because he did what they wanted...it's a sickness, in my opinion...that needs to be eradicated, but this government, the real perpetrators are not going to fix a problem that they created...they'll just keep exploiting Black people...we need a force to counteract these kinds of games being played with our lives, our innocent children, young people, etc....

We are so vulnerable under this system but unfortunately, there are so many Black people that don't sse it as i do, and I know that for this reason, this government will keep committing atrocities...and we will have to wait and wait and wait on the government to run the court process to prove to many whether or not they going to bring justice...
