    I drove it several times
    nothing did I miss
    from washington park
to where garfield turns into 55th
    about eight miles
from the green of the park
    to the airport called midway
    I drove it several times
    on a hot september day

    from depressed
    to impressive
is how I'll describe the economic condition
    traveling east to west
signs of before and after prohibition

    from black
    to brown
    to white
    the color of skin
    seen on this south-side night
    windy city scenes
    at their best
    at their worst
what is called a black ghetto
    is what I saw first

oh so many of my brothers and sisters
    still cought up
    in the crack cocaine explosion
    abandoned buildings
    high-light the erosion
    hidden somewhere
    is positive goodness
    there must be this balance
    this I know
but what I see is criminals
    teenagers hanging out
    babies in tow

    further west
gated door homes line the street
    the rhythm quite different
    a mexican beat
    streets are cleaner
    friendly is the demeanor
    the scene much different
    any out-of-towner can see
is this part of 55th any safer
    or is it just me

    most interesting
    was just before the airport
    signs of white life
    still holding on
    mostly elderly
    can't afford to move
    lanscape will change
    mexicans on the way
    this will happen very soon

    chicago no different
    from any other city
    some places gritty
    other places pretty
    millions mixed with millions
    cultures combine
    why so much disparity
    I really couldn't say
I guess chicago wouldn't be chicago
if it were any other way

I AM FEELING YOU ON THIS ONE!

    Yes! Sweet Home Chicago!!!!!!!!!!
Just left September 3rd. Much of what you say is true.
But, I don't see it every day as you.
When I return to what once was home...
All over the city I feel safe when I roam.
Maybe it's a childish delusion, more likely it's vacation
illusion. From Chicago style Pizza to Harolds and Carsons.
You can't get any better or diverse and to me that's a
    bargain!
    SWEET HOME CHICAGO!
    BLESSINGS ON YA HOUSE!

I can so relate to this. As a Chicago (suburb) kid, I took that drive last week. I went from Evanston (home) to 80th and Cottage Grove. I watched the differences from corner to corner and it's absolutely unbelieveable. I even drove on 79th from Cicero to Cottage Grove. Passing the Islamic restaurant, churches, liquor stores to the east to open streets and no liquor stores to the west. I could've sworn that the sun was even shining brighter on some sides of town. Nice skrybe. Very nice.
