    I remember so clearly
    the little brown box~
you kept it tucked safely away
on the top shelf of your cupboard
    in amongst your clothes
    so it was hardly noticeable~
but I always knew it was there

I also knew it held irreplaceable memories
    precious items of yesterday
and I was not to open it~
but it mystified, amazed and intrigued me
to the point where I ask you to let me see
    what was inside

I watched as you opened it
    your hands opening the clips
    so softly
like you were touching a delicate flower

    you withdrew a family letter
    written so beautifully in italics
it was a sons last letter to his mother
before he died in the war~
there was an old strop razor
    a few little trinkets
    some old papers
    that were faded and worn
and a length of long, dark brown hair
that I used to sit on
but foolishly cut when I was twelve

    there were sepia photographs
of my grandmother and her sister
and of you and your father and brothers
    cracked and ragged and aged
    with time and your fingertips
    but still in good condition

I watched as you showed me
each little treasure in the box
    taking notice of the way
    your big hands moved
    and how your eyes changed
    with everything you touched
and it was at that moment
    that I knew
    what the little brown box
    and it's beautiful memories
    meant to you

    when my daughter
    your grandaugther
was just past three years old
she came to me holding a memory

she held in her tiny little hands
    a little blue suitcase
just the right size for her baby hands to hold

it held her favourite fingernail polish
clothes for her cabbage patch doll
    pictures of her brothers
    her precious collection of jewellery
    some pictures she'd coloured in
    a few pencils
    and when space permitted
    her favourite outfit

    it went wherever she went
    and whenever I saw
    your grandaughter
    with her little blue suitcase
    I saw your daughter
    with her daddy
    and a little brown box
