    the saxophone
be the vessel of a jazzman's soul, alone
on a subway platform at Pentagon City.
his music cuttin' through space, like machete-arm'd canesmen
slicin' air and sugar cane for the harvest.

    brass whines
for dollar signs/ says his spine
can't take the park bench another night, he play like a lover in tune
hopin' the night's hustle get him a hotel room & something to eat.

he play her til' his reed's wet, like chunks of chew'd cane strands,
saliva make the reed sweet.. sound run like an electronic pulse
through a spine charged, like a cardiac restart.

last time I heard a sax scream like that, was when Coltrane
show'd his baby "JUPITER".. brutha sex'd the sax
left her brassy frame warm & funky, wet & broke in. brutha be a street
    charmer
charmin' loose change to hit where his baby lay abused & ready to be used
to keep his stomach full & pockets fat.. says his spine
can't take the park bench another night/ so he keep playin', she keep prayin'
her body hold up to the abuse, 'cause she's disposable. replaceable,
ain't ready to be done yet.. she keep on cryin' out notes, says "if I keep
    him satisfied,
    maybe he'll appreciate me"..

    {{Anita J.}}

"If I keep him satiated, maybe he won't throw me into the scraps of metal
To rust like the doors of his heart.
See, my "Tu-Ku"s ain't playin' like they use to
Wish he would just bring me back to an easy "La-La",
    But
he say his back is aching while its my wind song he's taking
    Double-tonguin' my syllables
Still tryin' to play me in F# (sharp) like a professional"...

But he might as well have been
Older folks would pass by swearin' they were hearin'
    Charlie Parker
    reincarnated
He'd be caught up in that zone
    Perfect round embouchure, makin’ O's
    Hard kisses on her tip
    And
She didn't know how much longer she’d be able to take it

But it was that janglin' of coins mixed with the rustlin' of dollar bills
    that he feened for
That spotlight on the corner of the metro stop where
    his audience would
    Come and Listen and Admire
His diaphragmic plunge into that zone
    Where
    The music drowns those
Who let it overtake their souls
    It was AMAZING
The way he never came up for air
The way she never stopped the flow
Of emotional cries that wailed into the night
    This was the Life.

But earth's rotation was bringin' the groove through too many transitionary periods
And he heard it, like the skip of records
    Felt the shift in energy
As he rode the train back to the area where he was raised,
    Back to Anacostia's familiar grounds
Upon that achin’ back he lay
    He and she restin' peacefully
    Rusted metal Sax
    Against
    A heart of Rusted Metal
His lips now on her tip soft as morning dew
    The souls of these two
Were lifted to the forever dream state of a Jazzman
Where Golden memories shine like that spotlight
    And she's fresh and new,
And Still beltin' out F#'s (sharps)
    Like a Professional.
Improvisational yet always foreboding of a destiny
    Come true
    Sang through her sopranic blues
    Her wish now came true
As the wind carries her soul through la-la-la’s
    homebound...
