A Graphic Description of the Portuguese Jew named Baruch Spinoza

Baruch Spinoza born Benedito de Espinosa; 24 November 1632 – 21 February 1677, later Benedict de Spinoza) was a Dutch philosopher. Spinoza's ancestors were of Sephardic Jewish descent, and were a part of the community of Portuguese Jews that had settled in the city of Amsterdam in the wake of the Alhambra Decree in Spain (1492) and the Portuguese Inquisition (1536), which had resulted in forced conversions and expulsions from the Iberian peninsula.

    BOOK: Abridgement of R. H. M. Elwes's 1883 Introduction to

    Quote -

"He was of a middle size ; he had good features in his face, the skin somewhat BLACK ; BLACK curled hair ; long eye- brows, and of the same colour, so that one might easily know by his looks that he was descended from Portuguese Jews. ..."
