the near north
{Representing my baby}:

Tomorrow…
The sun will rise
Hello’s and goodbyes
Will sometimes ring hollow
Still…
It is the beginning of my days
…the start of new ways

{the rules have changed}

Today…
I stand at the threshold
Of new beginnings
Stepping away from my childhood

{I look back}

On my elementary years
With fond memories and tears
On my middle school years
Of life’s transitions creating small fears
On my high school years
Of eventual growth through maturity pains
Everyday wasn’t good
But
I’d do it again

I stand at this doorway
Leading to manhood
I’ve earned the right
My parents taught me good

As I walk the walk
Across eternity’s stage
To collect my paper
For the years I’ve gave

I took a quiet moment
…gave thanks to God
For all things accomplished
I even gave a nod
To Moms and Pops
Who’ve gotten me here
From boyhood
To man
Helped me to overcome my fear

When my walk was over
I exhaled my peace
Then breathe a sigh
Of sweet release

I stepped up to the plate
For sustenance and care
And graced the table
With love that I share

I walk into tomorrow
With head held high
I may not succeed
But
At least,
I’ll try.

I’m a graduate.
