90-year-old 'Miss Opal' starts march to D.C.
from Ft. Worth, TX

FORT WORTH -- At the ripe young age of 90, Opal Lee doesn't think there is much she can't do.
That includes a 1,400-mile trek to Washington, D.C. "I'm an old Johnny Appleseed," she said, with a laugh.
Lee was joined by about two dozen family and friends on Thursday night before setting off on the journey ...

But there is no national day of observance, something Lee has fought passionately for over the years, and something she thinks needs to change before President Obama leaves office.

"It's so important," she said.

Lee has secured a meeting with the Congressional Black Caucus later this month. She will fly to that, and then fly back to where she left off walking, and resume the journey by foot.

WE THE PEOPLE ASK THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO CALL ON CONGRESS TO ACT ON AN ISSUE:

Juneteenth designated as a National Day of Observance

Created by D.S. on August 28, 2016

The "19th of June" or Juneteenth commemorates when the slaves in Texas were formally notified of the freedom granted by the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Lincoln more than 2.5 years later on June 19, 1865 by General Gordon Granger on Galveston Island. The historical significance affects not only African Americans in Texas, but also the many others who have stood for racial equality nationally and around the world. In recognition of the fact that 45 states celebrate Juneteenth as a state holiday, we believe that designating it as a National Day of Observance like Flag Day in U.S. Code: Title 36 will provide an opportunity for all Americans to learn more about our common past and to better understand the experiences that have shaped our Nation.
