SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Early Sunday evening, LeBron James will gather his Miami Heat teammates around him and offer a few final words of wisdom before they try to extend their reign as NBA champions.

James never rehearses the speech, but already knows what the gist will be.

"It would be in the range of, 'Why not us?'" James said Saturday. "Why not us? History is broken all the time. And obviously we know we're against the greatest of odds."

Three wins in a row, downing the same squad over and over and over again. That’s hard against any team, and yet that’s what the San Antonio Spurs are attempting to deliver on Sunday night. The Western champs are trying to win their fifth title in 15 years, downing the two-time defending champion Miami Heat along the way, and avenging the Spurs’ 2013 NBA Finals loss in the process.

The San Antonio Spurs should have been able to see it coming a mile away. The Miami Heat had three days to grit their teeth and prepare to keep their championship dreams alive after a Game 4 loss, with Chris Boshmore or less predicting a win, LeBron James imploring his teammates to follow his lead, and the Heat’s collective backs against the figurative wall. For the first quarter, at least, it looked like the obvious storyline would play out: LeBron managed 17 first-quarter points, and the Heat were up 22-6 at one point and finished the first frame up 29-22, the team’s first advantage at the end of the first quarter in five Finals tries.

Then, the Spurs started passing again. They started taking chances offensively and backing off the Heat’s poor spacing on the other end.
