    28 days…..

I got 28 days to reflect
    28 days to collect
    historic information.
that goes back since the creation
    of man.
And that is such a hard task
    And I ask
    Why I just got
    28 days?
I got 28 days to realize my purpose here.
28 days to respect those before me,
    and respect the fear
that they had when they laid out the path
for me and other sisters and brothers.
And in my 28 days I want to learn about
the Benjamin Bannekers, and Black Moses, and ,Brother Malcom Shabazz,
    and Booker T.
and there is more for me to see.
but that task is so vast
    and I have to ask.
    Why I just got
    28 days?
28 days to learn about Madame C.J. Walker, or Granville T. Woods, or what about Thurgood
and I never understood, why I never saw these people in the books,
so I got 28 days to look for people like
Fredrick Douglas, and Rosa Parks and her ride on the bus,
And the outcome gave us great Joy,
Or how about the great inventions from Elijah McCoy.
Or How Marcus Garvey wanted his people free,
Or how Lewis Lattimer not Edison, created the light bulb so we could see.
And in these 28 days I search for the strength of Sojouner Truth,
and the knowledge of Alex Haley the Author of Roots
The list grows on and on…Paul Robeson,or Sambo Jackson
who blessed us with Ice Cream. Martin Luther King Jr
Who shared his dream. To me it just seems
like they could have at least gave us 31 days to celebrate the richness of our race.
but I guess I will take claim to that great gospel song Iwon’t complain,
and be thankful for those before me that chose to survive
But on the real you can keep your 28 days
    I’ll celebrate my people….for 365..

    The facts

true facts often are in our face but we choose to duck and look the other way. the fact is we are deprived of equal status, but we hav to push on like those before us...Im digging this peace.

    I absolutely love this piece...

back in tha day... it was only one week at school, with, MAYBE, a special service at Church on the weekend ... I don't even remember when the powers that BE/IZ "let" us have the rest of the (shortest) month. But it is indeed a good time to place extra special emphasis on our heritage, our contributions...

it's just that I be's Black 24/7/365....and me and mine are reminded, recognize AND respect that all year long.

    thank you for this

    No doubt

No doubt Alyce... my parents used to tell me about the emphamis "week", I have two shorty's of my own, and I constantly point out things that we have contributed as a people...that they wont learn in school. it is so important that we teach people positive history instead of negative results. MLK jr and Brother Malcom were great men, but our children learn more about their deaths than what they did as men, it gives them the idea that if you do right you will be dealt with and thats wrong. So take the 365 to share love of our people...
    peace and thanks
