AFRICANGLOBE – A teen who spent three years in a notorious New York jail without ever having been convicted or put on trial is coming forward after filing a lawsuit against New York City. In June, charges against Kalief Browder were mysteriously dropped and he was released, as first reported by WABC-TV.

Browder was a 16-year-old sophomore in high school walking home from a party in the Bronx when he was arrested on a tip that he had allegedly robbed someone three weeks earlier. He was hauled off to Rikers Island, a prison known for punishing conditions and overuse of force, and was held because he couldn’t pay the $10,000 bail.
Browder went to court on several occasions, but he was never scheduled for trial. After 33 months in jail, Browder said a judge offered freedom in exchange for a guilty plea, threatening that he could face 15 years in jail if convicted. He refused. Then one day, he was released with no explanation.

    Peace Raptor,

actually.. difficult as that may be.. he probably should. It's not like he has any form of recourse. All of the animosity will only hurt him.. it does nothing to them... they destroy lives every second of every day.. that's their charter.. their purpose. Best thing for him to do is get some form of counseling to see if he can undo that 3 years of prison culture and abuse.. then find a way to leave NY for good. In the end.. Hating the judicial system is like hating a mountain. Even if a cop or a judge is fired.. nothing changes. It's the nature of the beast.

Then he should also give up the civil suit and let it ride.

Even if he gets nothing out of the case, he took some kind of stand.

Happens all the time on Rikers Island. Can't tell you how many C.O.'s have lawsuits pending for violent/over use of force and extortion. Back in the day it used to be even worse because they could literrally get away with MURDER on the island.

    Ck these out:
