Record number of Americans live in poverty
Census Bureau says 43.6 million people in 2009, up near 4 million in a year
msnbc.com staff and news service reports
WASHINGTON - The number of people living in poverty in America rose by nearly 4 million to 43.6 million in 2009 — the largest figure in the 51 years for which poverty estimates are available — the Census Bureau said Thursday.

The bureau said in a statement that the official poverty rate was 14.3 percent, or 1 in 7 of Americans, the highest proportion of the population since 1994.

It was the third consecutive annual increase, up from 39.8 million, or 13.2 percent, in 2008.

The bureau added that there were 8.8 million families living in poverty in 2009.

The poverty rate for under-18s rose from 19.0 percent in 2008 to 20.7 percent in 2009, but fewer people 65 and older were in poverty, with the percentage rate falling from 9.7 percent in 2008 to 8.9 percent in 2009.

@Ankhur
Those statistics do sound bad and the worst figure is the increase in poverty...
Just as a comparison though...

UK Poverty facts
Nearly 13 million people live in poverty in the UK – that’s 1 in 5 of population.
3.8 million children in the UK are living in poverty.
2.2 million pensioners in the UK are living in poverty.
7.2 million working age adults in the UK are living in poverty.
70% of Bangladeshi children in the UK are poor.
Women are the majority in the poorest groups.
London has a higher proportion of people living in poverty than any other region in the UK
The UK has a higher proportion of its population living in relative poverty than most other EU countries: of the 27 EU countries, only 6 have a higher rate than the UK.

that nation is still a Monachy as long as it has a House of Lords an maybe they are going through Karma

for colonizing and enslaveing the entire melinated world,
and trying to maintain control via the Pilgrim's Society and Tavistock

And to be honest African Americans could care less about Stockholm Syndrome immigrants that leave their folks in poverty and destitution and take their skills and smarts thousands of miles to help and service the folks who colonized and opressed their grandparents.

We didn't come here on a Jumbo Jet
we came here in chains,
that we have not healed from Yet!!!!!

Whether you understand what Black folks here in the US are going through

from the destruction of Glass Steagall,
and the creation of GATT and NAFTA , is not my concern

From what I gather, StephiA you live in Europe?
If so, that would make sense on why she included the UK statistics.

I think Americans tend to take it for granted that most or all things are American, American related, or American standard unless otherwise noted.

Most people here I assume are American, so all or most of information is skewed towards that way or that demographic.

But if she an African/Black British..... then surely here statistics for her country would be just as relevant as those of the United States.
