After a trillion dollars given to folks in high finance , since last February,
    who should have been thrown
    under the jail

    now this?

Record number of Americans live in poverty
Census Bureau says 43.6 million people in 2009, up near 4 million in a year
msnbc.com staff and news service reports
WASHINGTON - The number of people living in poverty in America rose by nearly 4 million to 43.6 million in 2009 — the largest figure in the 51 years for which poverty estimates are available — the Census Bureau said Thursday.

The bureau said in a statement that the official poverty rate was 14.3 percent, or 1 in 7 of Americans, the highest proportion of the population since 1994.

It was the third consecutive annual increase, up from 39.8 million, or 13.2 percent, in 2008.

The bureau added that there were 8.8 million families living in poverty in 2009.

The poverty rate for under-18s rose from 19.0 percent in 2008 to 20.7 percent in 2009, but fewer people 65 and older were in poverty, with the percentage rate falling from 9.7 percent in 2008 to 8.9 percent in 2009.

Those statistics do sound bad and the worst figure is the increase in poverty...
    Just as a comparison though...

    http://www.oxfam.org.uk/resources/ukpoverty/povertyfacts.html

    UK Poverty facts
Nearly 13 million people live in poverty in the UK – that’s 1 in 5 of population.
3.8 million children in the UK are living in poverty.
2.2 million pensioners in the UK are living in poverty.
7.2 million working age adults in the UK are living in poverty.
70% of Bangladeshi children in the UK are poor.
Women are the majority in the poorest groups.
London has a higher proportion of people living in poverty than any other region in the UK
The UK has a higher proportion of its population living in relative poverty than most other EU countries: of the 27 EU countries, only 6 have a higher rate than the UK.

And to be honest African Americans could care less about Stockholm Syndrome immigrants that leave their folks in poverty and destitution and take their skills and smarts thousands of miles to help and service the folks who colonized and opressed their grandparents.

We didn't come here on a Jumbo Jet
    we came here in chains,
that we have not healed from Yet!!!!!

Whether you understand what Black folks here in the US are going through

from the destruction of Glass Steagall,
and the creation of GATT and NAFTA , is not my concern

From what I gather, StephiA you live in Europe?
If so, that would make sense on why she included the UK statistics.

I think Americans tend to take it for granted that most or all things are American, American related, or American standard unless otherwise noted.

Most people here I assume are American, so all or most of information is skewed towards that way or that demographic.

But if she an African/Black British..... then surely here statistics for her country would be just as relevant as those of the United States.

The only point of me posting those stats was to show that the poverty rate in the US isn't unique in the western world. It wasn't meant to illicit any sympathy for folk here, though me personally I care about people everywhere.

    @Ankhur
I don't want to change the thrust of this discussion/thread, but I just felt the need to pick up on one of your points...
Somehow you've put me as a biracial girl, born in Texas, whose black part comes from Georgia not the UK in the position of needing to defend black folks here. Now black people in the UK who come from Africa are in a large part refugees from persecution - I'm not sure of the exact percentage, but I think it would be unfair on them to label them Stockholm Syndrome immigrants. The biggest group are people who came from the Caribbean islands - so they left islands which weren't their original homelands and which were run by the British to go to another island that wasn't their homeland run by the British - and not by Jumbo jet, but by boat - the famous one here is a boat called the 'Windrush'. Plus of course most of the British African-Caribbean people here were born here as they're descended from those people who came on the boats - they had as little choice in where they were born as anyone else. Maybe if people want to talk about any of this we should start a new thread cause like I say I don't want to get this thread off topic.

OK here are some stats more relevant to the US that I found...

The US Census declared that in 2008
13.2% of the general population lived in poverty
    8.6% of all non-Hispanic White
    11.8% of all Asian-American
23.2% of all Hispanic (of any nationality)
24.7% of all African-American (34.5% of black children live in poverty)

Now if the average rate has increased to over 14% I would think the rate for AAs must have increased at least as much, though its likely to be an even greater increase I would have thought since the percentages are so skewed against AAs in the first place. I couldn't find an accurate figure for 2009
