In the Spirit of the Cement Jungle,

10 most miserable cities in America

In America’s most miserable cities, residents were less likely to be in good physical health and far more likely to report unhealthy behaviors. Residents in all of the nation’s 10 most miserable areas were more likely to smoke than the average American. They had higher obesity rates and lower income than the typical American household, and the percentage of adults with a college degree was universally lower than the national rate of 29.1%, and in four instances, it was below 20%.

    10. Evansville, Ind.-Ky.
    Well-Being Index score: 62.9

Pct. adults with college degree: 22.2%

    Pct. smokers: 29.4%

    Median household income: $44,887

Half of Evansville residents said they were suffering last year, one of the highest proportions nationwide. Like most metro areas fairing poorly on the Well-Being Index, Evansville residents earned less than the average American.

What amazes.... and puzzles.... me is the report of 1 in 5 Americans having a college degree. I find that hard to believe. There are infinitely more worker than management/executive jobs, certainly more than a 1 to 5 ratio, and since most Americans are white, that seems odd to me so many college-educated (whites) would be working in clerical/factory/low level jobs.

Consider that folk need to get paid to live, regardless of the credentials they possess.

... btw, did you city make the top ten list?

I find it hard to believe that whites with college degrees would not foment REVOLUTION at being held to jobs driving taxis or flipping burgers. That 20% PLUS figure of degreed people is mighty suspect.

As for my city making the 10? No.

I hear Ya, but here are some of the facts:

College Students This Is Your Future: High Unemployment And Student Loan Hell

Hundreds of thousands of college students all over the United States have just graduated and are getting ready for their first taste of the real world. Unfortunately for them, the real world is not always easy and it is not always fair. In fact, for large numbers of recent college graduates, the transition to a world of high unemployment, brutal student loan payments and lowered expectations can be extremely sobering. But the truth is that we have taught these young people to have a completely unrealistic view of the future.

And here's Duncan on the issue:

Arne Duncan: ‘White suburban moms’ upset that Common Core shows their kids aren’t ‘brilliant’

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan told a group of state schools superintendents Friday that he found it “fascinating” that some of the opposition to the Common Core State Standards has come from “white suburban moms who — all of a sudden — their child isn’t as brilliant as they thought they were, and their school isn’t quite as good as they thought they were.”
