I think women have always wanted a "Barak" meaning a man who can take charge and still act like he has some sense. Since you don't see a "Barak" on average, nature takes over and the ladies get the closest thing they can get (which sometimes in waaay off).

I must say I found it painful as well and after two attempts had to leave because it just broke my heart.
