The Oil Tree & the Old World

Learning about the Olive tree in the past and present and how the western civilization made use of many things to make their economy strong is one of my passions. One of the things that interest me about the Olive tree is how it was revered in the Old Mediterranean world and also the Biblical world. It absolutely amazes me too, how extensive the olive is used in so many products. Another tree that has also interested me is the Shea tree. For this reason and more, I will share my findings about this tree but also many other fascinating things in regards to other trees and ‘things’ taken out of the Old World to the New World.

THE OLIVE TREE

Based on my research, it is amazing as to how many products are made using the olive oil. I have come to learn that in many products, it is the basic component.

Olive oil was and is still the basic component of soap in the past and present.

Olive oil is also the basic component of many brands of DISH WASHING LIQUIDS.

So, I hope to share some more information about the olive tree and how it has been used over time. In the ancient world, it seems it was used for making light as well.

The olive tree is said to be native to the Mediterranean region. It was not native to the Americas, however, it was brought over here and cultivated in certain areas. In the Mediterranean world, it was called 'SYRIAN SOAP' and 'ALEPPO SOAP' and etc. The Europeans began to make soap with olive oil and brought this process to Spain; Castile.

Castile soap, was made based on the old world but one of the other main components was not readily available; LAUREL OIL. In the Old World, Laurel oil was also used along with Olive oil to make soap.

LAUREL OIL from the Laurel tree, 'TRUE LAUREL' is another amazing tree and oil. Today we know it as THE BAY LEAF and it is used to flavor meats and such. The Laurel tree is also native to the Mediterranean region. This BAY LEAF is also known to have other major benefits of which I am still researching. I couldn't find it in stores, so I ordered it months ago, and as of yet, still have now used it.

Outside the Mediterranean [edit]
Olives are not native to the Americas.
Spanish colonists brought the olive to the New World
where its cultivation prospered in present-day Peru and Chile.
