Science and Technology : Linux is Not Windows

That is part of the problem. This is aboUt MONEY!

I have a Linux administration book from 2000 that talks about the Planned Obsolescence of software. I tried to get a discussion going on a few "Black" websites about Black people standardizing on Linux. There was a Black Voices website but it was actually run by the Chicago Tribune. I didn't really expect any action as a result but I thought it would make a worthwhile discussion. I got about 3 responses.

Lets be honest, blacks are not much into technology. Look how the tech thread on here die? It you, me, CRW and maybe one or two others. When I want to talk tech, math, Or physics I have other boards for that. But this is part of that tech gap that we have been trying to close for decades.

And you're right, it is all about the money. Look how pervasive windows is? People underestimate the popularity gaming and animation that makes those games. Student from middle to high achievers in this field rarely do their full 4 years before they are snatched up.

But the size of the user base affects the amount of development done for the OS. But now Linux is in the Rspberry Pi and Beaglebone Black and IoT is taking off so MacroScam must try to invade that. It is about the MONEY.

And they will be gobbled up like the rest. All the big boys have done this, that is they get the product, and the costumer base that goes with it. DO you remember HotMail, Firefly, or Bungie Games? How about Net games, or Lion Head studios? These are just a few that Bill saw as a threat so he bought them, and incorporated them into his software bundles.

Peace!

What some may fail to realize is that there are a tremendous amount of old PC's out there using old Microsoft software that are no longer supported. These PC owners don't want to purchase a new computer and still want to use there old machine in a modern way. The linux kernel can run on just about any computer, MAC or PC and if you have old machines a linux distro can give it new life. As software goes depending on the linux distro there may be more than 50,000 software packages available.

I agree with you because I've seen those type of folks. And you know what? Everyone really didn't know the first thing about PCs and upgrades. I've have tried to explain upgradeability To many folks but they don't get it because they don't know what RAM is or the difference between a gigabyte, terabyte, or megabyte. I know people that (like you said) look at how much they spent on their PC and think that it should last for 10 or 15 years. Then they go out and buy progs that they have heard about like games, apps, etc. And can't read the side of the box that tells you the min. requirements.

One of my friends got mad at me because she asked me how much could she get for her Dell running XP.... I told her she would get better value out of it using it as a boat anchor...

I tried Linux when it first came out. But what killed it for many of us....Application Program Interface....AKA... API. Microsoft loves it because it's low level, uniform, and Windows won't slow it down. DirectX came after APi. IMO it's a matter of OpenGL vs Direct3D...Yah see, back in the day the videocards that the consumer bought did not have support for OpenGL. If you are a gamer do you remember Quack, and GLquake? One was software rendered, and the other was hardware rendered. Now you have GPUs like my GTXs that uses shaders. Now Linux does have a long list of games, but it's missing the "big boys" like Fallout, Modern Warfare, Doom, etc.

Peace!
