Black Relationships : Do you feel "wedding rings" are necessary?

I'm glad you state that. Some believe that for Christians to get married, they need a wedding ring, when I've read nowhere in the bible this was a necessity for marriage. Very good point.

I've always had issue with the ring thing, but went with the flow, lol. Like you, I've not seen a requirement for a ring in the Bible, in fact, had it not been for Moses and the people, Jesus, Yashua, Eashoa never would have allowed a decree for divorce.

God knows the heart and the commitment ...

So true. I remember asking as a child if I needed a ring to get married, and my mama told me I didn't. So I wondered why everyone always used one, and she told me it was just tradition, and that anything could represent the same as the ring, if I even wanted anything. This started me on wondering if it'd be shallow or selfish of me to want a guy to buy me something like that, which usually doesn't come cheap.

But people look at you kind of funny, especially women, if you imply you don't necessarily want a ring. :10500:

I think it would depend largely on the lucky groom and his commitment or non-commitment to the Word of God, all others really don't matter. However, I do agree with your Moms input, it definitely lines up with the Bible, for sure.

Yes, that's evident that they aren't necessary on their own, but I'm asking how each person feels about it to see how necessary they think it is.

Some actually act as if not wearing it is going to destroy their marriage, when I always thought marriage was a deeper commitment than a single piece of jewelry.

Well, symbols are important. Tossing out your wedding ring, for instance, is a gesture of rejection if nothing else.

You were asked? *puzzled*

At the wedding ceremony I had, I was asked to put a ring on my wife . . ..

And the last part is really sweet. ^_^

Sweeter even as when I told my wife I did it later that evening she said she did too. :)

Do you feel a wedding ring is necessary for marriage?
No.

Like, why not a wedding bracelet, or watch, or necklace/chain, or earring?
If that floats your boat, why not?

Or why not just the commitment?
Ring, bracelet, watch, necklace, chain or earring, does not a marriage make. They're just YOUR alternative symbols of marriage.... which may or may not carry that "piece of paper" that says the "commitment" is legally binding.

Is that thinking too little of the marriage to not have a ring because you fail to show others you're in a committed relationship for life?
No. In a society that places value on symbols, it prolly says you don't really care that much about your marriage. Or, you may be maverick who couldn't care less about "symbols."

A little fact: I read somewhere the wedding ring started with the Egyptians as their tradition for marriage. I wonder how it spread as a now common tradition like so.

That's the point - it's a tradition.
