Pan Africanism : White Bajans-versus-Guyanese Bajans

dunwiddat

As a Bajan, do you see this video as a truthful depiction of the views held by some White Bajans towards Guyanese Bajans?

The statement on the video says Bajans prefer White people to Guyanese. Whites are not concerned about Guyanese..once they come here they can pay them low wages.

Cherry blossom I have been trying to post these comments and I pc is giving so much trouble. I will get to the next comment.

....or....aside from the video, what is the "racial climate" like in Barbados?

We do not have any racial problems here. I am not saying there is not racism..Whites business people still have the edge over black business when it comes to loans. White do not really mix socially so blacks are not bothered.

....economically, socially, politically, educationally, etc..? The whites still control the private sector.. Whites tend not have blacks as their close friends, they may mix at business lunches etc. Politically all of our members of Parliament are black. We do not have any white politicians. Barbados is 90% black...our educational system is based on the British. Our literacy rate is 95% Our children do well in school. Most white children usually do not go to university except for those who receive scholarships. Most whites still prefer to work in the private sector, family businesses etc.

...Is there still a lot of racism there between whites and blacks? The racism may be overt.

Black folks don't really make much of white folks. There is a fundamental difference between black Caribbean people and Black African Americans. The large percentage of blacks have carved their niche in society. Our hospitals are manned by black nurses, doctors. The majority of the pharmacists are black. Black folks own homes, cars etc just like white folks and sometimes better. The blacks have better jobs than some white folks... Since most white folks are not into university eduation...But remember, whites only make up 5% of the Bajan population.

The thing about Barbados is that it is the only country in the Caribbean that was ruled soley by the British all the other islands including Guyana had Portuguese, Dutch, French etc. Perhaps this has been good for us. Our infracture is good and we were never hostile like the Jamaicans.
...Is there a "class system" among Blacks according to skin col.Nope. People may have their own personal feelings., but blacks don't care. Blacks know that black is beautiful. We do not feel any sense of inferiority.

Hope I have answered your queries.

Thanks for the whole!

This part, though, was especially of interest to me because of the historically ingrained/indoctrinated "self-hate" and "colorism" so prevalent among Africans and African Americans.

....even in many South American countries.

....across the Diaspora.

In other islands, like the Bahamas and Jamaica and others, there is still a "color caste/class-system" because of the inter-mixing of African, European and/or Indians. ---- where-in the "poor" or "commoners" are separated from the "elite" by skin color.

...either ostracized or privileged....

The Black Irish: Rihanna's Ethnicity And Nationality

.....In fact, she is West Indian. She was born in Saint Michael, Barbados on February 20, 1988. Of her parents, her mother, Monica Braithwaite, a retired accountant, is a mix of African and Guyanese. (Guyana is located off the northern coast of South America). Her father, Ronald Fenty, was a warehouse supervisor. He is of Barbadian and Irishheritage.

The Irish and the Africans have a long history in Barbados. They toiled side-by-side during the era of Anglo-American slavery. The first African captives arrived on the island in 1627, and the Irish came in numbers from 1648, after English statesman and military leader Oliver Cromwell conquered Ireland and deported up to 50,000 Irish soldiers, political prisoners, dissidents and others, selling them on to British plantation owners as slaves and indentured servants. Many of them coupled with Africans, which is why so many biracial Barbadians today have Irish surnames.

Throughout the history of the island there have been tensions between blacks with differing skin tones. During Rihanna’s childhood she experienced the same intolerance of her light skin and mixed-race heritage as many African American stars such as Jennifer Beals and Vanessa Williams before her. In school she was called “white” by her classmates. “They would look at me, and they would curse me out,” she told Allure magazine in January 2008. “I didn’t understand.” The bullying continued right up until the last day of elementary school, when she finally escaped it for good. Rihanna attend the same secondary school as one of my sons. Rihanna has a light skin but there are number of people here with that skin.. When I hear talk about people of Irish and black ancestry, what most people don't understand is the fact that most of the brown skinned or light skinned folks is that way because of the plantation system. White men got black folks pregnant...these white men were not married to these black women, so someone may say they have Irish or English ancestry, but their great grandparents became pregnant for married white men on the plantation. I often tell people my grandfather was married to my grandmother, her children were not conceived in the cane fields. I am still amazed when I hear people say they have this ancestry and the other ancestry...these were illigitimate children borne by black women who had no option but to let the white plantation owners and their white overseers breed them. These women could not refuse the sexual advances of these men...so the whole thing of ancestry is a JOKE. All the descendants have to show is THEIR SKIN COLOUR.
