One of my favorite movies of the early 90's is New Jack City. When it came out, I was a teenage knucklehead - thinking I was a gangbanger. Well, one night, I was watching New Jack City on DVR and I fell asleep. I began to dream.....

A group of moderately successful, yet highly conscious Black folks got together for a special purpose. They noticed due to burst in housing bubble and weak economy that home values were dipping to decade lows. They had a plan. They would pinpoint a relatively commercially successful Black community with decent access to transportation means, i.e. freeways, train depot, bus routes, etc., that was declining in value and experiencing an increase in vacancies. They would begin to purchase property and land in these areas at rock bottom prices. Some in the group were strictly to purchase residential property and others would purchase commercial property and vacant land.

After they had accomplished a buyout of 25-50% of the property in a designated area, they would began renovation, rehabilitation and revitalization. Old dilapidated houses were gutted, redesigned, transformed and resurfaced. Old commercial areas were repaved, rehabilitated, and resurfaced. A couple old fourplexes were purchased and transformed as well.

The new homes on one street needed tenants and immediately a tenant search was performed to fill the homes. A thorough application process was instituted to ensure only people with integrity with a sense of community pride would move in. Rules were set that no b/s would go down on the block first, next the street and soon other streets. A community open house was held to invite all new members to meet, mingle and mix with their neighbors. From this a neighborhood watch was formed.

Once the residential phase was completed, the commercial phase began with a centralized strip mall area. The goal was to have a barbershop, cafe, beauty salon, light hardware store and a modest corner store. The owners of these shops were encouraged to relocate in the community. Those that did received a discounted rent. The pilot development was a success and soon other commercial areas were opened for business.

The real property that was purchased, nothing more than a few brownfields and dust areas, was planted with fresh sod and a dozen treelings. One area was selected as a community pride garden with flowerbeds, a variety of plants and bushes - seasonals and perennials. At the entrance into the community was a common area with a park bench and a metal brick red structure shaped into the Adinkra symbol of Fawohodie that had bright yellow ribbons tied around it. The unofficial name of the community was called "Independence Park." Eventually, the street through the main commercial area was emblazoned with bright yellow flags with red Adinkra symbols on them hanging from the light posts.

That was my dream. A New Black City. Do you like this dream? If so, what can we do to make it a reality?

The Bird (still Black - always and forever)

So what's the objective?

We become the Nino Browns and Cash Money Brothers in our communities. We gang up. We operate like a gang, a gang of Black folks working with intent and purpose to take over the Carter.

Once we take over the Carter, we replicate the Carter.

Who's down for a New Black City....?

I had a dream just like that..

Here's the ad..

Baldwin County, Alabama
15114 acres by Robertsdale, Alabama for sale Acreage
15114 acres
$35,000,000.00

OK.. here's the plan.. we collect 100 from 350,000 black people.. and we
buy this 15,000 acre property in Alabama in cold cash.. put 350,000 names
on the title.. then, every two weeks for the next year, we collect another
100 dollars from the same 350,000 people.. and that's 35 million dollars every
two weeks.. for 26 periods.. that's almost 1 Billion dollars.. (910 Million to be
exact.. just a 3 more paychecks to a billion).. anyway.. we'll never see that
billion, because every two weeks, we spend every nickel purchasing more
property.. inside and outside the united states.. for the next 5 years.. every
two weeks, we keep buying and buying and buying.. until we have somewhere
near 500,000 acres of land inside and outside the united states..
then with our 910 million per year budget, we begin development.. through
our own developers.. and we create the kind of communities that we deserve.
then when we get all of this in place.. we just live. no rent, no mortgage,
no economic slavery.. just the usual demons of regular life..

ok.. ready.. set... Go!!!

this whole thing is about the model.. not about the numbers..
the idea is about cooperation.. and about how much bigger we are when we
cooperate with one another.. the same model will work for 10 cousins.. working
for minimum wage.. 100 dollars every other week is 26,000 per year.. 10
years.. thats 260,000 dollars.. increase it to 200 at and thats 780,000 dollars
in 20 years.. working regular jobs.. these cousins can use that money however
they see fit.. for property.. personal security.. as opposed to social security..
they can add more or less... or combine with other larger groups.. and through
that type of process put real economic power in their own hands.. as opposed
to asking white folks for loans.. and chances to do stuff.. we can make it
happen ourselves.. just by thinking outside of traditional profit oriented schemes..
No investments.. no interest.. no formal organizations.. just pure cooperation
between like minded people..

I agree the plan should include buying land
and setting up industry in Africa.. All of that is possible after a strong
cooperative system has been adopted.. if we had done this 30 years ago..
we could send real aid to Haiti.. send them a billion dollars.. we could loan
money to governments.. buy a seat at the table.. change the whole game.
it all sounds dreamy but how many households have cable? How many
millions of dollars does Comcast recieve from black folks every 2 weeks?
way more than 35 million.. how many callers vote on American Idol?
it's all possible, especially today with the ways that we
all have access to eachother.. we could setup and coordinate our nationwide
activities.. information campaigns.. town hall meetings.. the whole nine..
no national press coverage necessary.. no sponsorship necessary.. the
internet levels the playing field.. Even if you failed and only managed
23,000.. that's 2.3Million every 2 weeks.. or 2300.. that's 230,000 dollars
every two weeks.. that's you could buy every vacant house in detroit.. and
own them free and clear as a group. all you're doing is setting up a subscription
to our future..

.. you know, I really try to steer clear of alot of those plans.. I just
try to work from within my own mind.. it's hard to explain.. but the attempt
to control us is so subtly placed that you can find yourself completely out of
context.. I think alot of us have the same kinds of ideas because we are
from the same kind of experience.. and if we all just put our heads down and
move forward in the ways that we know how.. the ways that we innately
understand.. no schemes.. no vagueries.. just straight clarity.. if we can do
that, then our children will have a chance at being something more than
dark skinned europeans.... that's the way I see it.. I'm just trying to figure
a way out of the fate that I see for our people 200 years down the line..
if we don't take control in some important ways, then we will be like the
Native Americans.. just features in other folks.. a wavy hair.. a broad set of
shoulders... "my great great great grandfather was African.."

it's how lots of family businesses work.. the motive isn't individual profit, it's
collective progress.. there are no fees.. no interest... no outside control..
that's how capitalism is mitigated and defeated.. you have to buy your
way to freedom.. just like the old days.. once you own your property free
and clear, you are that much free-er.. once you have your own energy
generation, you are that much free-er.. once you have your own water
supply.. and your own food supply.. then you are free.. and a free person
is dangerous to a slave state.. they want us all pre-occupied with chasing
down that dollar.. they want to use up our time and energy in pursuit of cash..
but when you have your own stuff.. free and clear.. you don't have to run
so fast.. you can slow down and take a look around.. and you can spend
building your nation.. your family.. your community.. educating your kids..
planning your future.. you can enjoy your life instead of spending it waiting
to retire.. waiting to get some money back after being pimped by the
government for your entire career.. but see, they can't pimp you if you
are free.. if you're not working 40 hours a week getting their making their
tax revenue for them.. Get a group together, buy some land, develop it,
setup your own self-sustaining community based on cooperation rather
than profit.. and they can't pimp you.. and that's really the model for a
family.. you don't charge your kids room and board, you provide a space
for them to grow and learn and be protected.. We can do the same thing
outside our families by just deciding to act in concert and by muting all the
greed, divisiveness and opportunism built-in to capitalism..

we all have to work within our own circle of influence..
you get your folks and do your thing.. I get mines and do mine.. and we all
benefit in the end. And those Korean banks give loans to Koreans without
all the red tape.. they are there to assist their people.. And we can do the
same thing.. but we have to define our own groups.. define our group goals out loud.
We have to define our circles and put together our coalitions in very
deliberate ways.. no accidental associations.. get your 7 guys and have
those 7 guys get their 7 guys to get 7 guys and you have your hundred.. draw up the
plan.. put all the assurances in place.. make it all equal.. no one above
anyone else.. establish some guidelines for the pact.. cut out profit motives..
take advantage of your numbers and make the contributions reasonably
small.. don't mimic any of the exploitative devices used by white capitalism..
cut out majority rules.. cut out all of the potential division.. once all the
property is owned by the group, open the stores and run them as businesses,
but without the pressure of making the loan payment or paying the rent or
any of those things that put folks out of business.. Imagine owning your store
and your house free and clear.. and helping your brother own his store and his
house free and clear.. imagine what kind of time we could have to
live.. and raise our kids.. and how many more kids we could have.. suddenly
we can afford big families.. big solid families.. that have time to transmit values..
and our sons and daughters can get together and start healthy families..
and I don't mean to give the impression that his is not already happening.. it is..
I'm just scheming on how it can be made real for more of our folks..

If we don't act as a group, we're not really a group.. we just look like one.

Mama Earth, RA and all 'em callin on Africa to get ready to clean up the mess that they breakin on. like we always do; they mess it off until such time as it don't sustain them no more, we clean it up and set it up for the next go'round ... again. !QA !RA!

fi'teen years or so ago, i got to thinking/wondering about some of the parts that might would be needed for the underlying infrastructure of a self sustaining city. it's just been sitting there at that url i used to use in my premium membership sig. maybe getting close to time to dust all that off.

sometimes seems like that reason that sent me to find this place back in feb of 05 might be pushing on saying time to bring the mess. what with Africa stirring like it be doing these days. (er'body think it about them being about something; that's just the crap about to shake off the outer layers: Africa be Rising!!)

[but none of it gonna fly until after this mental disease called "capitalism" loses it's grip!]

That's a very important point. It's also the most difficult point to get across to
the buisness minded.. they don't get that all of the ills that plague us as a
society.. the greed.. the selfishness.. the disnunity.. all of those things are built
right into capitalism. Capitalism appeals to the individual's lust for
possessions.. for status.. for money.. it's a system where the ends justify
the means.. where all ways of gaining capital are respected.. doesn't matter
who you step on.. murder.. oppress.. victimize.. long as you get that paper,
it's all good. And there is a ton of regulation by the government aimed at
keeping it as exploitive and destructive and self-serving as it is. And any
talk of building anything.. an organization.. a nation.. etc.. has to take on the
ills of capitalism directly.. and not just in words but in structure and practice
and policy.
