Depression and African-Americans

I think that it is too bad that some of us are suffering from depression, but are too afraid to come forth and tell someone

I agree!

I also overstand WHY people are "afraid" to come forth and tell someone. They are then labeled or adjudged WEAK or some other such foolishness.
I also know this to be a "sad" state of affairs. "Sad" because of the LOST opportunity for healing.

I am not a mental health professional, and I, too, have suffered from depression. I will give two helpful tips that are helping me to heal:

1. Depression is mainly a deep internalized feeling of powerlessness (about SOMETHING....usually personal or collective traumas that are unresolved).

2. We need to get to the point that social approval becomes meaningless where this issue is concerned; therefore, recognizing when people are using tools (including religious ones) to keep you in line is extremely crucial. The more you try to sit on pain, betrayal, etc. and pretend it doesn't exist because you are trying to be "the bigger person", the more it will bite you in the a--. You might as well confront THE problem and move on. CONFRONT IT.

What are some things that you have found to help you through it?

i see depression as anger that is turned inward against yourself. the solution is to vent that anger outward.

rather than hate on myself or other black people, i hate the system of white supremacy.

hard physical activity that works the muscles of the back, arms and legs is helpful in venting anger.
many black women do not have any form of physical activity. something that makes you sweat and works the muscles to exhaustion.

taken regularly the herb saint johns wort helps as well as antidepressant meds with no side effects.

drink lots of water. get a full sleep. no meat. fruits, nuts, grains and vegetables. small amounts of dark chocolate.

i study the book, metu neter written by ra un nefer amen.

i meditate daily.
