There has been a recent phenomenon, in difficulty in finding fresh fish here in NYC.
We have 3 Chinatowns with over 40 fish mongers, and in the Bed Stuy shopping area 4, but there are less and less choice of fresh fish.

When you purchase fresh non frozen fish please make sure the eyes are as clear as your eyes, with the Black pupil showing clearly.
The 2 exceptions are mullets whose eyes are usually bloodshot and Sea Bass who has a foggy eye, like a stale fish.

to determine the freshness of these 2 types;
when you press the underpart of your thumb firmly, the gills of these fish should be that color, and there should be no slime.

I learned from the Carribean community to wash the fish with vinegar, and then rinse, and wash again with fresh lime

Stay safe and healthy

The acidification of the ocean today is larger and faster than anything scientists can find in the fossil record over the past 65 million years. According to a recent study in the journal Natural Geoscience, current ocean acidification is taking place at ten times the rate that preceded the mass marine extinction 55 million years ago.

It is getting harder and harder to find fresh fish with clear and not cloudy eyes

earth song Micheal Jackson

Yeah from what i hear, they also have to feed the fish in the Great lakes to keep them alive. Profit is king in capitalism and if they destroy the world while in the process of trying to make $ of it, they give less than a hoot. Plastic is also ravaging the ocean and altering our DNA but who cares as long as somebody makes a dollar. It makes the think at times aliens have infested certain people and are destroying earth to achieve some goal under the cloak of modern invention and innovation.

Same thing is going on in California where I live. I went through this phase where on 3 different occasions, I brought some fish home that looked fresh but when I went to prepare it, it stunk and smelled spoiled. Now I ask to smell the fish before they seal the bag closed. If that fish don't smell right, I tell them straight up "that fish ain't fresh" They must think black people is savage and just eat anything because they have the nerve to try and convince me that I am wrong, that the fish is quite fresh. some of them even get an attitude with me because I won't be an obedient and docile N word and just accept what they say. The un fresh fish seems to be only in the black communities because lately, I been going to the meat markets in the places where white people live and frequent, I ain't had no problems with bad fish since I began doing this.

I feel you and glad you are at least able to do that

The Russians have stuff you would not want to give to your cat, and the Italians who used to have good stuff, have a bunch of foggy eyed critters, even at their best markets.
I even got burned at Fairway!
Even in the 3 Chinatowns here , one has to look long hard and carefull, and make sure the fish you gave the guy to clean is the same one he puts in your bag
