THE FALL AND REDEMPTION OF THE SOUL ACCORDING TO GNOSIS

The salvation of our soul is a really transcendental matter. This subject has been thoroughly discussed along the centuries by the Gnosis of each time or by the different expressions that Gnosis has acquired through millennia. Dr. Serge Hutin, from the University of Sorbona -Paris-, tell us the following in his work entitled “Les Gnostiques”:

“According to the Gnosis, the soul, the immaterial part of man, is always a luminous fragment of divinity that has been detached from above and confined on the Earth: therefore, a descent or a fall from the Light happened in the beginning of humankind. A sexual reason is sometimes imagined as the cause of this fall: The Divine seed is lost, it is infiltrated into the womb, that is to say, into the chaos, into the matter, but afterwards, “the Saviour” recovers the Divine seed by bringing the chosen souls towards Him.

“On the other hand, in Manichaeism we find an involuntary fall: the primordial man descended in order to fight the darkness, but the darkness caught him, and he could only get free by abandoning his heart of light. These are the fragments of light that mixed with the tenebrous matter and gave origin to the world. So, the point is how to separate the luminous substance from the mud –tenebrous matter–: in the Creation, the superior parts await the moment in which they will be set free. Here we find again the fundamental idea of all Gnostic teaching: a divine element has been lost in the inferior regions; this Divine element that is sunken in the matter, will try to be recovered”.

"The problem of the Gnostic is to learn how his soul, that is a divine spark, will be able to return to the superior regions from where it has fallen".

An ancient Gnostic text states:

Since I was joined to the flesh –says a Manichaean psalm, that sings the unhappiness of the soul– , “I forgot my Divinity”.
“I have drunk out of the goblet of madness, and I have gone against myself”. (Written by Péetrement in his work “Le Dualisme chez Platón).

erge Hutin adds the following:

“And what increases the anguish of the Gnostic is knowing that the soul moves on from prison to prison, and it is compelled to go through incessant reincarnations”.

“The Gnostic feels anguish because of the imprisonment of his soul into the matter, and this gives origin to especial myths such as: the metaphysical adventures that relate the fate; the consecutive situations lived by the “human I”. The soul or “animus”, talking in the Jung’s language, is projected in form of mythological archetypes, that can take masculine or feminine forms”.

“When a feminine entity appears in the Gnostic myths, these myths can be considered as different forms of the same archetype: the Great Mother. Among these myths, we can highlight the Gnostic myth of Sophia issued by the school of Valentinus and the one by the heirs of the Coptic texts”.

“The numerous variations of Sophia's myth, that exist in the Gnostic literature, make us forget that the story of Sophia is reflecting -in the theogonical and cosmological plane- the passion and salvation of the human souls, that is to say, it is reflecting the essential problem raised in the Gnosticism of any time; and it has been the source of its main myths. In these myths we always find the same cosmic catastrophe: a Divine element -light, breath-, its fall in the darkness, in the matter, in the impure womb, and how this spark that came from above will be saved”.

Our kind reader has to know that the Gnosis of all times has always stated that the creation of worlds really obey to Divine laws. By means of these creations, what the Gnostics have always called the AGNOSTHOS THEOS –that is to say, God without shape, the true Demiurge, the Occult Eternal Cosmic Father– wants to send a part of His own light (the Divine sparks or souls) to embody in the aforementioned worlds in order to gain wisdom from their contact with the matter.

Nevertheless, it is written in the book of life that whenever the Divine spark descends to the matter, it will suffer an angelic fall; and this fact is shown in the religious books of all ancient civilizations and cultures that have preceded us in the course of history.

Unquestionably, this angelic fall is very well described in western terms, in a very well-known work by John Milton entitled “The Lost Paradise”. In the same way, many other religions from the Middle East and Asia, and also many texts from the Meso-American pre-Columbian cultures talk about a Divine Adam who fell in disgrace later on, and was imprisoned into the matter, and was deprived of his divine faculties. The contemporary Gnosis, developed by Mr. Samael Aun Weor, dedicates complete chapters to the explanation of the creation of worlds -the Gnostic Cosmogeny- and the human races that populate those worlds -the Gnostic Anthropogenesis-. In those chapters, the reality of the myth of Adam and Eve is described, and its historical correlation, placing the story in a continent called “Lemuria”, that supposed to have existed where we find today the tempestuous waters of the Pacific Ocean.

The Gnosis states that from that event on, man remained prisoner of a lot of tenebrous entities, that took away man's true light, little by little.

This is the Pistis Sophia's misfortune, and this is not symbolic, but real. This misfortune has continued in the human race throughout the cycle of reincarnations or returns of the soul into new wombs. In this process, the “animal I” has grown more and more inside the human creature, decreasing more and more the percentage of Consciousness that allows us to have free will.

In addition, Mr. Serge Hutin says:

“We have to clarify that the Gnosis conceives the soul or spirit in a very concrete and tangible way; the superior soul is light in the strict sense of the term. The notion of spirit “in extensu”, as it is conceived by the Cartesian or Aristotelian philosophy, does not make sense for the Gnostic. For the Gnostic the spirit is a light, a fire, a breath imprisoned in the body –in the literal sense of the term. Some Gnostic branches do not hesitate to compare the human seed to the Divine generating pneuma; they say that man possesses the pneuma in his own seed”.

In this sense, friendly reader, Mr. Samael Aun Weor, the Father of Gnosticism of the 20th century, stated:

“Gnosticism implies a set of coherent, clear and precise elements, that can be verified throughout the direct mystical experience:

* The curse from a scientific and philosophical viewpoint.
* Adam and Eve of the Hebrew Genesis.
* The original sin and the departure from Paradise.
* The mystery of Lucifer.
* The death of the “Myself”.
* The creative powers.
* The essence of the “Salvator Salvandus”.
* The sexual mysteries.
* The Inner Christ.
* The Igneous Serpent of our magical powers.
* The descent to the Hell.
* The return to Eden.
* The Mephistopheles' Gift.
“Only the Gnostic doctrines that comprise the ontological, theological and anthropological foundations cited above, are part of the authentic Gnosticism”.

“Unquestionably, the Gnostic knowledge always escapes the usual analysis of subjective rationalism.
The correlation of this knowledge is the innermost feeling of the person, the Being”.

“The Gnostic experience allows the sincere devotee to know himself totally, and to achieve self-realization. Here, self-realization must be understood as the harmonious development of the infinite human potential. This is not a matter of intellectual data randomly arranged, neither is it mere unsubstantiated wordiness, or ambiguous chatter. What we are relating in these paragraphs must be understood as a real, vivid, authentic experience”.

“The features that clearly specify the Gnostic myth, and that mutually complement each other are the following:

1. Supreme Divinity
2. Emanation and Pleromatic fall
3. Demiurge Architect
4. The Pneuma in the World
5. The Duality
6. The Saviour
7. The Return

“The Supreme Gnostic Divinity can be characterized as AGNOSTHOS THEOS, the Absolute Abstract Space, the unknown or unseen God and the ONE reality -from where the Elohim emanate, in the Dawn of any universal Creation”.

“The Gnostic myth of Valentinus that, in a specific way shows us the Thirty Pleromatic Aeons, mysteriously coming forth from the Absolute Abstract Space by successive and orderly emanations in perfect couples, must be understood as the archetype or model of a Monist myth; that in a more or less evident form, is present in every defined Gnostic system”.

“This transcendental topic of the “proto-prole” basically leads us to a ternary division of divinity: the Agnostos Theos -the Absolute-, the Demiurge, the Father, etc.; the divine world, the glorious environment of the pleroma, that came forth directly from the negative light, from the negative existence.
Finally, the Nous, Pneuma or Spirit contains in itself infinite possibilities, susceptible of development during this manifestation”.

“The fall or the multiplicity, has been born among the extraordinary boundaries of the Being and Not-Being of philosophy. The Gnostic myth of SOPHIA's FALL -divine wisdom- solemnly allegorises this terrible disruption in the heart of the Pleroma”.

“Desire, fornication, to want to stand out as Ego, brings about disaster and disorder; and it produces an adulterated work that, unquestionably, is left out of the Divine realm –although the Essence, the BUDDHATA, the Psychic Material of the human creature, remains trapped in such a work. The impulse towards the unity of free life in motion can drift away towards the “I”; and in this separation forge a very bitter world”.

“The fall of the degenerate man is the basis of theology of all ancient nations. According to Philolaus, the Pythagorean, –fifth century BC– ancient philosophers used to say that the Psychic Material, the Essence, was “buried” in the “I” like a tomb, as a punishment for some sin. Plato testifies to this, that such was the Orphics’ doctrine, and he himself professed it. The excessive desire, the disruption of the emanation regime, leads to failure. To want to distinguish ourselves as Ego, always brings about disorder and the fall of any angelic rebellion”.

“The deviation of the Demiurge Creator, the fatal antithesis, is the inclination towards egotism; the real origin of so much bitterness. The Essence, the Consciousness, bottled up in the ego, is processed painfully in the time, depending on its own conditioning. This situation -not very pleasant indeed- (ceaselessly repeated in the Gnostic accounts) of the pneuma, cruelly submitted to the Power of the Law, the world and the abyss, results too evident as to insist on it”.
