Peace and Blessings Family,
I know that when a person is convicted of different levels of crimes, they may lose some rights that they had prior to that. I believe convicted felons can't vote, though there may be some exceptions or something, i don't really know enough about this. I know if a person is convicted of rape, or some other sexual predator type crime, they can't live near schools.
The reason i'm asking the question, is because i don't understand how the government condones working prisoners for less than minimum wage. This seems so wrong to me. These are usually Black Men, since we are disproportionately represented in the prison system, that can't buy a job on the outside, but in prison there's plenty of work for a Brother?! Of course, he's working for free or almost free.
I remember seeing an article recently, i might have even posted it, i'll try to find it ... anyway ... the article talked of how great a job the prisoners did in Georgia, fighting a massive forest fire or something big like that. They talked about how great they worked, but we all know, in real life ... Brothers are pressed to get job likes fireman in the community. These primarily go to white males. It upset me to see this, because i know those same Brothers, if they were free, would NEVER be able to be employed in that manner.
Somehow in prison, worthless, no good, Black Men are transformed into working machines, making billions for the industries they are hired out too.
Even while this is going on, perfectly good jobs, that could be in the public sector ... giving folk ways to earn their keep, make a living, etc. ... these jobs are reserved for prisoners. That seems like a conspiracy. How you gonna have all these jobs for prisoners (Black Men), but a Brother can't find a job no where out on the street, that pays him enough to sustain a Family.
How does the government get away with this?
When one is imprisoned, do they automatically lose their right to minimum wage?
What other rights are lost?
Thanks in advance Family.
