'Why The Cocks Fight: Dominicans, Haitians, And The Struggle For Hispaniola' by Michele Wucker

Another good book, that is fairly balanced, with a few errors on both sides. Gives a good understanding of the differences and similarities of the 2 countries.

Actually that last question about the skin cream was a serious question. Sosa is Dominican, so is the poster that I addressed, I really wonder if he wants to lighten his skin like Sosa, seems they share the same state of mind. I find it well kind of wack that this person says he wants "Haitians" on to stay on "their side of the Island" then tells "us" that Confederacy is just people commemorating there fallen comrades. I feel no remorse for "going hard" on this type of foolishness.

Insults or Analysis? guess it depends on how sensitive one is.

You are correct, it can be taken as an insult for given as an insult depends on how it was taken or how it was intended. For my part was not taken as an insult. How was it intended? Yes Sammy Sosa and I are both Dominicans. But then So are you and Bill Cosby both Americans. Are you the same? Why should we be?

In answer to your question on sammy sosa, no I do not feel a need for a skin lightener. Contrary to popular belief not all Dominicans are the same color as Sammy, in a family(brothers and sisters) you can run the entire color range from white to very dark. This is due to the mixing that has occurred over the last 400 years. Sammy and most of the other MLB players come from the lower end of the social ladder. In Sammy's case he was a limpia bota(shoe polisher) before he made the Majors. Last census composition of the Dominican population is 73% multiracial, 16% white, and 11% black. Sammy is worth millions but he will never be accepted into the upper social strata, just as you if your not there already would never be accepted into the upper levels of your social strata. If your not born there you don't belong ever. Difference between old money or connections and new money.

Now as to the Haitians staying on their side of the island. They have their own country. We fought a war to win ours back from them after being occupied for 22 years. Now Imagen if you had instead of 12million illegal immigrants you had 60million concentrated in NY and NJ, a 5th of your population! This was not a civil war where they reunited after the war. This was 2 separate countries that fought a war for dominance by the one and independence for the other one. Independence won!

We celebrate 2 holidays here for Independence. February 27 is our Independence day from Haiti, same as your July 4th Independence from England. Then we have August 16th which is restoration day for when we gained our independence from Spain for the second time. This also involved a 2 year war.

Other questions about either the Dominican Republic or Dominicans just ask, and I will try to answer, but don't make assumptions based on Washington Heights, or MLB. We receive our 100 or so Deporte's per month.

I am really not botherd by it. I guess they have a right to be proud of the ancestors even if they were devils.
And what did the Confederate flag represent that the American flag didn't or still do?
