I understand how so many different ancient cultures recognize the winter solstice as the birth of their respective sun gods cecause the solstice occurs at the same time all around the world no matter whose calender is in use.

Now I am trying to understand the ubiquity of the virgin birth of said sun godsss. My understanding is that the concept comes from the brightness of the constellation Virgo at that time. This raises the question of how the ancients associated this constellation with a virgin unless they knew the word Virgo.

Is virgo an Khemetic word borrowed by the pagans who came agter them? Is there something about the constellation itself that would naturally remind one of a virgin?

One thing that comes into my mind is the idea that it was the sun itself that was viewed as the virgin as it rose from its sleep. Hundreds of years before Jesus the ancient Greeks believed it was possible to renew one's vrginity by bathing in the spring Kanathos at Nauplia. The stars of the Virgo constellation then become the angel host who accompanied the birth of Christ.

Merriam-Webster defines virgo thus

Main Entry: Vir·go
Pronunciation: 'v&r-(")gO, 'vir-
Function: noun
Etymology: Latin (genitive Virginis), literally, virgin
1 : a zodiacal constellation on the celestial equator that lies due south of the handle of the Big Dipper and is pictured as a woman holding a spike of grain

Now we could ask why this constellation is depicted as a woman and what is the significance of the grain.

Let's go back to the Khemetians. If we see how they associated this constellation with a virgin it will be easier to see how the later pagans borroed this concept and incorporated their own mythology into it. To me that would make more sense than thinking that everybody just looked up and saw a virgin.

I put together the following webpage where you can compare pictures of the constellation Virgo to pictures of Auset (Isis) and Heru (Horus).

Remember, perception doesn't happen in a vaccuum. One person sees the vision (associating this with that) and tells someone else who looks at the picture and sees it as he never saw it before. In that way many people can began to see something the same way and a mythology is born. When this happens in a cosmopolitan culture like ancient Khemet other cultures will naturally incorporate that vision into their mythology.
