    Actually, the pope was Nicholas V who issued these papal bulls to Portugul.

    Rodrigo Borgia aka Pope Alexander VI issued papal bulls to Spain with similar effect sometime after Nicholas V.

    Rodrigo Borgia represents the height of papal corruption in the history of the Roman Catholic Church.

    Those papal bulls still have the force and effect of law even today. They are applied here in the US primarily to Native Americans. The "Doctrine of Discovery" has been the policy of the US since the Supreme Court case Johnson v. M'Intosh (1823) under the Marshall Court.
    These papal bulls have never been annulled.

    Let's also keep in mind during this time Muslims were enslaving Africans transporting them throughout North Africa and the Middle East (with aide from various African tribes for Arabs and Europeans).
